In my opinion, they are greater.

Dempsey fought in a weak era. other champions that fought in weak eras made up for it by having long title reigns and making several title defenses (Louis, Holmes, Wlad) and in Marciano's case being undefeated, but Dempsey was not undefeated nor was he a dominant champion. Over the span of 7 years he only made 5 title defenses (with 3 of them being against light heavies)

AJ in 4 years made more defenses than Dempsey did in 7. AJ also has the better resume. His wins over Wlad, Parker and Ruiz are better wins than almost anything on Dempsey's.

It's a bit harder to argue that fury is greater than Dempsey due to him making no title defenses at all, but he still has the Superior resume. He ended Wlad's 10 year reign, which eclipses anything Dempsey accomplished in his career and ended Wilder's 5 year reign in dominant fashion which is also a bigger accomplishment than anything Dempsey did.

    Its a tough comparison.

Dempsey isn't great necessarily because of his actual accomplishments. Most of Dempsey's best work was done prior to winning the title.

Dempsey was great because he brought a new style to heavyweight division, the bob and weave, crouch style combined with fast hands and a big punch. There were fighters like that in lower weight divisions but Dempsey was the first HW champion to bring that style.

Plus, from a financial perspective, it was better for Dempsey not to fight often. I wish that he did defend his title twice a year, but still....

AJ has beaten two guys past it (Wlad and Povetkin), is 1-1 vs a fat guy in Ruiz. AJ has a lot of talent but I am just reluctant to put him in the all time top 10.

I'll admit that in terms of actual accomplishments, Dempsey isn't top 10 either. Ali, Louis, Holmes, Lewis, Marciano, Frazier, Holyfield, Tyson etc. all had a better championship reign than Dempsey. Foreman and Liston have better wins than Dempsey do as well.

Still I rank Dempsey in the top 10 due to his overall ability and historical significance. I'll admit that his championship accomplishments are sorely lacking in comparison to some of the other guys.

Like I said, its a tough comparison. AJ and Fury are still active fighters and one loss here and there can radically change our view of them.

No, Dempsey's resume is a bit overrated by his fans, but it's still clearly better than what Joshua or Fury did so far.

When they both are retired and then forgotten, some kid will ask if the current champs are greater than Dempsey. Which pretty much answers it's own question. Dempsey is the Everest of Boxing history.

That's a bit easier of an accomplishment considering there's 4+ titles to pick from today to become a champ as opposed to 1. Gene Tunney is a much more difficult opponent for Dempsey than fat ass Andy Ruiz or Deontay Wilder. The skill level isn't even comparable.

No. Both need more fights. Also, neither Joshua or Fury have conquered their division yet. If either becomes undisputed and gets in some quality defenses there would be a good argument, but at the moment not even close.

The short answer is that they are not, but that they yet could be.

That is kind of another way of saying that they both lost the title.

Look at Parker's record against people in the top ten.

It is hit and miss at best.

I would wager that he would not be consistent against Dempsey's opposition.
