Do we create these monsters? I mean this is the era of the 20 second highlight on ESPN right? Fans don't like Bernard Hopkins because he grinds out wins, he doesn't blow guys out of the ring like Mike Tyson did. Fans don't like the Klitschko's here in America because at times they seem awkward, off balance, and robotic in the ring. Were we spoiled by the Mike Tyson's and Roy Jones Jr's because this is a generation of "highlights" and perceived "skills" that we all look for? When we take a long look at Mike Tyson's and Roy Jones Jr's careers, is it not true that they didn't accomplish what a Bernard Hopkins and Wladimir Klitschko has? Oh but wait, remember when Tyson knocked out that bar room bouncer on his way to the title? Or remember Roy Jones Jr's dominating win over the great Eric Lucas? Now now, as a fight fan saying that Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr only looked dominant against the lesser competition, I know, those of us who remember their careers for what they are, we're (shaking) "HATERS"! Isn't it the same thing today? We reward Floyd Mayweather's cherry picking because we like his shoulder roll and the way he counterpunches. We reward Manny Pacquiao's cherry picking because wow does this guy throw a lot of punches or what? 4 of the most hyped up fighters from the last 20-30 years find ways to gain all of this credibility even though they either cherry pick, or get exposed when they step up in competition. So why is it that fight fans stand for this? I'll tell you why, we live in a pathetic era of sports fans where fans watch highlight videos on Youtube and come up with fantasy's of their favorite athlete being better than the greatest of all time in a given sport. You see it on here, you see it in other places, the young ESPN watching Youtube highlight video watchers have NO RESPECT for the all time greats. They merely want to feel good about their cherry picking highlight maker so they downgrade all of the great fighters from the past in exchange for their cherry picking hero, or they forget a Tyson getting his ass handed to him by ****ing Buster Douglass of all people, Holyfield, Lewis. They selectively forget Roy Jones Jr being put to sleep by low volume punching Antonio Tarver, or taking a long nap after getting nailed by Glen Johnson. Why do we reward duckers, dodgers, and overrated fighters? Because this era of sports fans suck.
What a complete idiot, go and watch Jones beat Hopkins 9 rounds to 3 and come back and say Jones hasnt accomplised what Hopkins has What win does Hopkins have to compare to Toney? What wins does Wlad have to compare to Larry Holmes, Spinks, Rudduck or even a Bruno FFS? BTW you complain about cherry picking and cite 1 of the biggest cherry pickers in recent history in Hopkins, who should I remind you avoided Jones Rematches, turned down career high money to fight Calzaghe nearer his prime, avoided Reggie Johnson, Chad Dawson, need I continue?
The promotors are to blame, they don't even hide tha fact that they're avoiding dangerous opponents. remember Warren blaming Rubio for the Prescott/Khan debacle, saying he made the mis-match. well, what's wrong with a 19-0 fighter facing an 18-0 fighter?
It's a combination of things - today's sports fan is a product of a combination of promotion, networks/media, and the overall immediacy of our culture where if you can't catch someone's attention in 10 seconds, you're not worth a damn. Good post - very good points.
You can sight a homer/nerd fanboy when you see these in their posts: :roflatsch Smiley faces are GAY. Secondly, when Hopkins fought Roy Jones the first time he had been a pro for a whopping 4 1/2 years, yes and prior to Hopkins's 4 1/2 years what was he doing? He was in prison. I am sure that you can't comprehend the hurdles one might have going from prison to professional boxing and being at the "top" of your abilities after merely 4 1/2 years. You talk about the obvious, which is Roy Jones the cherry picker who flunked the test when he took it against top competition, or wait, were they even top competition that knocked him out? Anyways, when Hopkins was in prison, Roy was honing his craft as an active fighter. You are exactly who I'm talking about, you are the nerd fan boy who enjoys a highlight video and WOW DID YOU SEE THE WAY ROY JONES JR PUT THOSE PUNCHES TOGETHER!? You know nothing about heart, and guts. Bernard Hopkins is ****ing 45 years old, 45 ****ing years old and as a 43 year old man he gave Calzaghe the fight of his life while your overrated hero, Roy Jones Jr looked like a ****ing bum against Calzaghe the slap punching cherry picker. So you can BASH Bernard Hopkins all that you want, proving my post to be true that people like you are mere morons, but you cannot erase the fact that B-Hop was world champion for 8 years. By the end of 2000, he had defended the IBF title 12 times without a loss, while beating such standouts as John Jackson, Glen Johnson (who was undefeated at the time), Simon Brown, and Antwun Echols. Let's not forget the fact that Keith Holmes was the WBC Middleweight champ, William Joppy was the WBA Middleweight champ, and Felix Trinidad was the former welterweight and light middleweight champ. Hopkins whooped them all, and Hopkins UNIFIED THE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. NAME ME THE FIGHTERS FROM THIS ERA WHO WERE ABLE TO UNIFY A ****ING CHAMPIONSHIP IN THEIR DIVISION, I'LL BE WAITING. From August of 1993 to February of 2005 Bernard Hopkins fought in 27 ****ing title fights and won all 27, SO WHAT PART OF WINNING ALL 27 STRAIGHT TITLE FIGHTS DO YOU NOT ****ING UNDERSTAND? WHAT PART OF UNIFYING THE ENTIRE DIVISION OF ****ING CHAMPIONSHIPS DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND? GO BACK TO JACKING OFF WHILE LOOKING AT ROY JONES JR HIGHLIGHT VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE.
Jones showed everyone in '93 who was better by beating your boy easily with 1 hand, Hopkins was a 28yo 4year pro, Jones was a 24yo 4year pro, Hopkins even had more pro fights, and when in prison he was continuing his amateur boxing, so way to prove your case ****** atsch You don't know **** about boxing, when Jones and Hopkins were prime NO ONE considered them close in terms of ability. Jones was fighting far far better opposition when Hopkins was fighting his great trilogy with Robert Allen Hopkins ducked numerous elite fighters including Jones/Calzage/Reggie Johnson/Dawson etc, showing your hypocracy about 'cherry picking' Hopkins doesn't have any wins as good as Prime Toney, Prime Hopkins, Prime Tarver (Hopkins fought a past prime weight drained Tarver) or Ruiz. Then you shout bull**** about Hopkins unifying the weak MW division (while avoiding Reggie Johnson WBO titlist), Jones did the exact same thing at LHW unifying the IBF/WBA/WBC titles, so WTF are you talking about ******? Hopkins has 1 thing on Jones and thats longevity, thats it, but he'll always be Jones ***** :yep
WHEN HOPKINS WAS IN PRISON YOU DUMB ****ING ROY JONES DICK SUCKER, WHERE WAS ROY? ROY WAS IN THE ****ING OLYMPICS AND IN THE AMATEURS. HAS 1 THING ON ROY JONES, YEAH HE DOES HAVE ONE THING ON ROY JONES... HOPKINS HAS NEVER BEEN ****ING KNOCKED OUT There's your one thing idiot. 27 ****ing title fight wins in a ****ing row, unified a ****ing division and was world champion for 8 years but you want to put Roy Jones Jr's overrated ass up with him, get the **** outta here with your bull **** I'm gonna downgrade the great Bernard Hopkins's career ****ing bull ****.
You just had to know some of these idiots would show themselves in this thread. No shock. None at all.
