Regular fitness and boxing fitness are totally different. Someone could be 'fitter' and more cut than James Toney. But JT will have MUCH better boxing fitness.

Yes - the first time I ever sparred - I rember how fatigued I was.

Not only are you not used to it - because you lack the finese of a being a regular sparrer - you waste alot of energy -

The more you spar - the more that finese comes to you.

Pros like James Toney - will conserve so much more energy just from their savve in the ring.

Some muscle bound guy - would be burning up energy bouncing up and down all wound up - Toney would just lay his fat bum against the ropes - draw the guy in and bash him up without much energy being expended.

Not every boxer ends up with a nose like Carl Froch.

Yeah, some things will transfer over, but other things you just won't be prepared for. If someone just does a lot of long distance running for example, at one pace, they won't be prepared for the different pacing, the stop start nature, the anaerobic bursts, lactic acid build up etc.

I mean, you could be super fit, but just something as simple as keeping your hands up could be a struggle because you don't have the endurance in your shoulder/arms.

True, the problem is that 'fit' is too broad a term, there are different kinds of fitness. You need to be fit for purpose, whether that be long distance running or boxing or whatever. Lots of different kettles of fish.

jonsey with all due respect your way off the mark on this one, im the 1st team coach at lincoln city and the lads on our team can lift more than you and run better times than you, they are a very fit bunch of lads for FOOTBALL, when i took them down to the boxing gym for some light body sparring and a bag session 3 were sick, there bodys are not use to that type of intense training and when they were forced to work to fight somebody off them in sparring it mentally broke alot of them, when i did the bleep test before my 1st fight i got to level 21 which is very good, after 10 years as a pro footballer id built up good stamina and could run all day, but after id done 4x2 mins on my boxing debut i was ****ed because i had zero ring fitnesand didnt know how to go for a walk and nick a breather when i needed one or spoil if needs be, i had no ring smarts which enable you to bluff it when your tired, and just on the flat nose thing in football i picked up more facial damage than i have in nearly 6 years as a pro boxer so thats bollox:good

Actually read what I said Curtis. Somebody said the reason I didn't box was because I would find the training to touch. I was pointing out the I am a fit guy.

and i agreed with you about ring IQ being as important as fitness.

    Everybodys face is different.

Level 21 is elite runner status, would be very impressed.

i think what we are trying to say to you is you compared doing long distance running, sprints, and bench press to automatically meaning you would have fitness to rival a decent amateur boxer if you began boxing, this is what you said basically

it is way off the mark as pointed out, just because you can do that stuff means **** all, i said you would lack fitness and you would, even if you improved all your running and sprinting times your fitness for boxing will still be **** until you go training and begin improving it, believe me its far more demanding mentally and physically to become a fit boxer than a fit person, two different things like apples and oranges

I think there are certain things you learn a lot quicker when you box, but not much that you can't learn without ever doing it. Angelo Dundee never boxed, he just loved the sport and hung around his brothers circles of boxing people. He listened a lot and learned quickly though.

As for the physical/mental side of the game, NOTHING can prepare you for being in the ring other than being in the ring a lot. It's like deep sea diving, in that it helps to be in good shape, but the physical and mental stresses it places on you can't be replicated, you just have to gradually adapt to it.
It doesn't mean that if you can't dive your unfit. You are just fit for a different purpose.
