My biggest regret in life is only picking it up at 22. I put it off for years. :-(

I strongly doubt it tbh. and even if you can run 10k in a similar time to these decent level amateurs ou would be exhausted after a couple of rounds of sparring. totally different in the ring :good

Yeah thats true i suppose. I was doing a bit of roadwork with Jamie Smith which i enjoyed. But my running days seemed a long way away when i was struggling 10 minutes in at half 5 in the morning

spot on, you cant get ring fitness by running, you get it by sparring

Exactly Curtis, My mate said same thing. Me and him spar together and play football and both agree.

Long distance runs are at same tempo, Sparring is far different it has different tempo's to deal with.

I have also only done training and sparring, and quit before I got too deep into it. Just wanted to try it out, and I found out after a while it wasn't for me. Football has been my first love (though I don't really care much for watching it).

With boxing, although I love sparring, I don't enjoy the other stuff that goes with it. It's just not a sport that you can do half-assed. I mean, my fitness was at a decent level because I used to do sprints 3 times a week, and skip rope twice a week, but sparring 6 rounds and I was blowing out my ass.

Nothing wrong with just giving it a try to see if it's for you though. I figured it's not my thing, but it made me appreciate what these guys do, and exactly how tough it is. Even to be a journeyman.

When I was younger was bigger on other sports played Rugby on Saturdays and football on Sundays had to give up the football even though I liked it more because I was playing at quite a high level. As a result never really had time for any other sports and boxing never really crossed my mind. I enjoyed boxing but as a fan rather than a participant

Gave up the rugby when I was 19 and when at uni started to get into the boxing training side of things for fitness and then got into a bit of sparring. Tried to be slick and black but realised im more of a face first fighter. I kind of drifted away from sparring because it frustrated me I was so bad basically.

Now i just hit the heavy bag from time to time. I think if I had started at early teens I would have been decent because im naturally athletic but at 22 its hard to walk into a boxing gym being a rank amateur essentially.

i just use long distance running as a way to bring my weight down, if you want ring fitness, spar spar spar, dont have wars every other day but get your rounds in, it works, too many trainers trying to re invent the wheel, im old school, spar, bags, pads and run that all you need to get fit to fight

completely agree. sparring at a fast pace is what it is all about. just body sparring is good for conditioning wihout heav head shots

It similar in all sports, I do a fair bit running (when I'm not off binging) but even sparring with my mates creates a different tempo that is a lot harder. Its the same with 5 a side, the pace is completely different and you cant train for it by going for a jog everyday. It does help get you in shape and for fitness to a certain degree but actually working at a pace you are going to be working at will always be the best prep.

Any idea where a unfit ****er like myself could start, somewhere East Manchester/Oldham preferably?

I'm 22 and never done bollock all boxing, but my fitness, or lack thereof is starting to **** me off, also I can't be bothered just doing Gym work as I find it tedious and dull. Any ideas fellas? Need to start light as I'm coming off 5 years of doing nothing but smoking weed and a bit of five aside footy every couple of weeks

Just get into a gym Jim, maybe a open one where you can pay and do as you like on bags. Rather then attending a proper AM session. You can get a feel for things and someone can guide you on bags/pads etc then see how it goes from there.
