Are we all just fans or do a few of you box?

Agree with every word here. Speaking from experience, starting from 22 I didn't feel like I was being judged at all. If anything, the coaches seem to favour towards me to get me progressed at my age.

A wee bit, I have a decent pop and good handspeed but a poor defense which doesnt combine well with my punch resistance which is akin to past prime Roy Jones spending two weeks in the sauna, getting out, then going for a chin removal surgery.

Should have been boxing at the Uni Champs but I had tonsillitis and didnt fancy boxing on the home show (against some American squad) like my coach wanted me too.

Most I done was sparred with a number of different sparring partenrs - got into some gym wars - and know from experience that getting punched in the face on a regular basis - is not exactly a wise decsion to make with your life.

I dont spar anymore - and I never fought - mainly because there is just no need to put yourself on the firing line to take abuse - when I dont really need to.

There is no need for me to be bashed up for other peoples entertainment.

Although - I still keep fit with various excercises - like running and skipping and bag work.

Like others have said - too vain to get flat nose and cauliflower ears and on a more seriius level - years of taking punches can result in long term brain damage -

Basically fighting - getting punched - the human body is not really meant to take consistent abuse like that.

    I agree.

There is different kind sof fitness.

He might be fit - going to the gym - running on the tread mill - or lifting some weights - or even punching a bag.

But if he suddenly jumped in the ring - with no sparring / fighting experience with a good / top level amateur boxer - he would most likely get bashed up easily.

exactly flint, you could be lance armstrong and if you went and done some sparring you would gas pretty quick because you dont do it, also when someone trains like that with no goal they can only reach a certain level of motivation, when you have a fight as your goal or tournament your motivation is way higher as is your training intensity, it was an ignorant statement one i hear quite often

It's a very easy assumption to make. I've seen decent athletic type guys blowing out their arse even after a intense pads session.

Boxed as a kid gave up in my early teens really enjoyed it but realised i didn't have enough dedication to make enough sacrifices to take it on to a higher level.

I started again 20 years later in my late 30's!A good mate of mine was training for a white collar event i went along with him to spar & to help out on the pads etc.We went regularly to two different gyms in north london & trained alongside rank novices to seasoned pro's.I can honestly say to anyone out there thinking people will laugh at you for first going into a gym you couldn't be more wrong. If you are respectfull you would be surprised regularly spoke to some of the pro's & they were nothing but helpfull if you asked them something.

My mate had 2 more fights for charity on the white collar shows over a period of a couple of years i kept on training sparred but didn't fight myself really enjoyed it got reasonably fit again for a man in my early 40's!Great exercise met some real characters & loved every minute still tick over with the training!

I did some boxing when I was 15 but gave up before long and started again at uni and the amount of attention I get from trainers at my gym when I'm home for holidays isn't a lot but a huge amount when you think im a 20 year old late starter who only comes a few months a year doesn't know anyone there and fights out of another gym.

Any self respecting training partner will usually roll with 'you got better training with people better than you'. Those being a dick to a noob at the gym isn't being a dick because of the noobs lack of ability, they're doing it because they're a prized nobhead inside and outside the gym.

whilst I'm in dasnger of blowing my own trumpet a little here I sparred with a University Champ. He was a new coach at the gym and he was moving around with various people and comfortably handling them. switch hitting etc and making them all look average without too much effort (white collar lads) but wasnt taking liberties

I got into spar and caught his right jab and threw a straight right down the pipe and it landed sweetly. repeat x2 and he went regular stance with the intention of putting me in my place. unfortunately he lost his sense of humour and was trying to hard to take my head off. it turned into a hgeavy spar but I bossed it. landing lead left hooks, solid jabs, counters,, body shots. basicaly beat him up without getting hit much myself.

round finished, him disillusioned me v happy. tbf he hadnt sparred competitively for a while apparently. but was a good buzz outboxing one of the coaches in front of an audience

I hate these kind of threads..? Sometimes people who box tend to think there above other fans, and their logic is 100% superior..? Even when they are complete ******s or dum ****witts, who have no co-ordination or ability..? just abit of courage to step into a ring.

No! I don't box....."I have trained within boxing"...but no! i have never ever boxed amateur or professional.

But i honestly believe, i am one of the hardest members in this forum. And i believe that my mind psychologically is by far superior to most other people here.

I dont get how people say they have done a spot of boxing training but never sparred? Why wouldn't you spar? Are you just going to a gym and hitting a punch bag and calling that boxing training or are you going to Boxersize or one of those type places?

As soon as i put on a pair of gloves sparring and generally fighting was the only thing i ever wanted to do. surely you would spar at least once then knock it on the head if you didnt like it?

And to the poster above who thinks bench press and long distance running equates to a boxers stamina should try hitting a punch bag for 60 seconds and see how he is feeling then!!
