It was never really a true great Welterweight era. The only real big fights where Mosley-Cotto and now Cotto-Margarito. Mayweather was the top dog and chose not to fight the 3 best out there.

We had all the fighters and personalites to make this a truly historic period in the division's history. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out that way and now it looks like it coming to an end. Mayweather is gone and if he does come back there's no gaurantee he'll even fight at welter again. Paul Williams will probably move up in the future. Mosley is at the end of his career. Cintron isn't going to be quite as good as hoped and if Judah loses his days as a top guy is over. Hatton tested the waters but didn't hang around long.

The future of the division is Cotto and he's already beaten virtually everyone of note in the divison(assuming he beats Margorita, which is far from gauranteed). Berto might be a future pfp guy but that remains to be seen. So I'd say yes, the division might have another year or so of good matches left before it falls from the elite of divisions.

Pretty much agree with that, only to say that really you don't stake your claim as THE top welterweight by beating.

    Judah, Gatti, Baldomir and Hatton

    at welterweight.

PROBABLY the best welter, was definitely the most talented by some distance, but really didn't prove it by beating the other top welterweights.

If those four names had been Cotto, Mosely, Margorito and Williams, I would never ever have said a bad word about Floyd again.

True . . . plus a new batch of fighters always blossoms after the big names are gone.

Who's gonna ever think that welter will be this exciting and competitive after Leonard, Hearns and Duran?

There was only 2 for Mayweather.

It was good for Mayweather not to fight Mosley. He would of been deemed old and past it considering he was on some illegal supplements. SO if needed thsoe supplements, obviously he's past it!

Pac moved to the lightweight, most SF fighters moved also to catch him. Lightweighters are also falling in line.

    What "welterweight era"?

The last true welter era (Quartey, Trinidad, DLH, Carr, Lopez) ended a while back!:deal

I disagree. The division is still very deep now. With guys like Cotto, Berto, Williams, Clottey, Cintron still with plenty of years left in them at this point.

Remember new prospects will keep coming, especially after the olympics which will be held soon.

HBO will no doubt find another great welterweight to sign!!!
