I've heard that before, and it may be true, but what did Chuck Lidell do to win so many MMA fights? box (sloppily) and slip out of takedowns, that's about it.

I watched Woodley slip out of Damian Maia's takedowns a few weeks ago, about 17 of them, so easily, it was like he had a 6 year old trying to tackle him. I'm sure slipping your leg out of an opponent's arms is tougher than it looks, but is it something a fairly young, athletic boxer can't learn in 6 months?

It's like when Toney trained to fight Coture, every week we got a different update on what he was learning, Toney's learning to kick...Toney's learning to sprawl...Toney's learning to use his knees and elbows...WTF, teach him to avoid takedowns and that's it, let him use his knuckles which is what he already knows.

Both Chuck and Woodley are expert wrestlers though and without that takedown defence they would not be the world champions they became.

Chuck was also a brown belt in BJJ.

Boxers stand side on which means they're wide open for kicks so they have to adjust their stance which changes the leverage they have in their punches.

6 months is not enough to learn an ATG takedown defence.
