i enjoy watching boxing at the elite level. be it technically skilled guys like whitaker or offensive machines like pac.
I'm drawn to fighters who are proven winners and show it at the highest level. I consider achievements and calibur of opponents as the determining factor in a boxers greatness, not a title an individual decides to bestow on another.
Regular boxing fans are drawn to fighters like Linares more than fighters like Guzman for one basic reason: they are jealous of true supernaturals. They look at Guzman and see his unbelievable talent, see him dominate fighters without much effort, see him showboat while embarrassing fighters who aren't born with a fraction of his talent.. they envy his skills, so they start looking for reasons to hate him. When these same fans look at someone like Linares, who could only wish he was born with half of Guzman's brilliance, they see a fighter who worked very hard for many years to attain solid technical skills. They see him struggle, then come through while trying his best. They like that he shows vulnerability, but in the end is victorious. The real reason why general boxing fans like Linares over Guzman all comes down to THIS: Linares is more human than Guzman. That is all. People have always been attracted to human qualities in other people. It is the reason they replay Gatti-Ward 20 times to all their friends, but change the channel when they see Whitaker owning Azumah Nelson on ESPN. It is the reason why they like the fact that Superman is geeky Clark Kent during most of the day. They look at Guzman the same way they would look at an alien who decided to go into boxing and possessed obvious natural abilities over his opponents and didn't need to try his best to win.
I agree. Spot on there Huki, I am not drawn to supernaturals. If I see a guy toying with an opponent or scooting to an easy decision, why should I be impressed. Its all about the guys who go out there and bust there ass, dig deep and overcome challenges.
Yes, I love to watch super naturals fight. They bring special qualities that are rarely seen. Calzaghe, Guzman, and Mijares are all special fighters.
almost all my favorite fighters are the ones who are truly elite. the best of the best. Sometimes I'll like a fighter who is not elite yet but has that potential if he develops his skillset properly. But if there's no greatness and no potential for greatness I'm not a fan. What about you Amsterdam? are you drawn to supernaturals or 31 year old fighters who are finally starting to take on B level opposition and struggling against them .
as far as impressive: -his left hook and right hook - for being mostly a welter he had some devistating power. That was a middle weight he was banging in there. That is like floyd going toe-to-toe with pavlik. -his defense and chin too were outstanding.
Got to say I'd love to see supernatural, imagine Superman boxing, wow! Although Joe Calzaghe would kick his ass.
