Hopkins was grabbing and climbing on Dawson's back, so Dawson threw him off. Old Hopkins just wasn't a warrior in the Cerdan mold. Cerdan went 10 rounds before he quit, he tried to win until it was proved hopeless. And even then some people probably critcized him for quitting.

 

Oh, you mean after his shoulder was injured? Yeah, he wouldn't have been able to defend himself well at all.

I don't recall Dawson having him in any real trouble at any point. Haven't seen it since it aired live and because it's an old man Hopkins fight, I can't bring myself to view it again

 

Should have been a TKO. Hopkins began it all with an attempted foul, Dawson just pushed him off. As for the Allen fight, always found it funny how a tap on the shoulder from little Mills Lane somehow catapulted Hopkins out the ring!

It was an awkward unorthodox position to begin with. Dawson went low on the inside of Hopkins and Hopkins did what any boxer would do and clinched. Dawson reacted by grabbing his legs and standing up then throwing Hopkins.

If you don't believe me then re-watch the tape because I just watched it 3 times in slow motion.
