I tend to look at things as having potential or not. Its obvious they are all good fighters, I would definitely look further into these fighters but judging them only on their bad days and not knowing any better, i can't see the greatness.
Boxing mavens, look into your chrystal balls. Do you see Jorge Linares bounding back to greatness after his shocking 11th round TKO to Antonio DeMarco, like Louis did after the first Schmelling fight?
I don't think you could from Ray there. Past his best and out of his best weight, he doesn't have his speed or fluency. Easy to say now but I think you could see it in Louis out of those, and that he simply had a stylistic error which he needed to correct. I don't think Linares has ever had greatness.
I've always thought Linares was a hype job, actually. You can check any of my posts on my old account. Never thought he would amount to anything, despite the plaudits he was receiving. Just not an impressive fighter for my money.
He just always struck me as a very basic technician with no notable physical attributes and no real ring savvy, i.e. not a thinking man's fighter, easily deterred, etc. His deficiencies were already exposed to certain extents by the better guys he faced when he was still being hyped (although he was fighting trash, more or less). I would raise anyone the exact opposition question, actually, what do you guys see in him? Or what did you ever see if you're no longer a believer? It'd be kind of hard to still be a believer, mind you, given the fact that he's also been exposed as having a glass jaw to go along with the fact that he's easily thrown off.
Duran-DeJesus I: Early signs that Duran is overrated. In the second fight when DeJesus gave Duran movement he had problems.
So your really comparing am up and coming with 11 pro fights Whitaker getting knocked down by an experanced vetren in Roger Mayweather and I will give you the B fighter part to Duran at the time an experanced vetran with 31 fights losing to a B level boxer than 10 fights latter still having problems with him?
Purely on the fights mentioned IMO you would struggle to suggest you could see greatness. Technical deficencies are abundant from all the greats in these particular bouts. By the same token if the only footage of Douglas and Tyson was their fight it would be tough to imagine Tyson had been such a dominant force
