Who do you rank higher, and why?

Who accomplished more throughout their careers?

Who hit harder, relative to their divisions?

I think I've been guilt of underating Arguello in the past, but I still consider Louis to be the greater fighter by some distance. We all know what he did, he dominated a division as thoroughly as any man ever has, and on film he looks as close to complete as any fighter you might say.

Arguello seemed to carry his power up with him - I think he may have been the more powerful of the two p4p.

I consider Louis a greater fighter than Arguello based on what they accomplished. On my list, Louis is top 10, whereas Arguello is top 25.

Louis dominated a division for a dozen years and had 25 consecutive title defenses (neither of which have been surpassed). In that time span, I think his opposition was good enough to surpass Arguello's world titles in 3 weight classes and underrated resume.

P4P, it's close. Both had right hands from hell. Can't make a pick there.

Louis achieved more especially considering the time he fought he mark on boxing will never be forgotten. I think Arguello hit harder p4p and also had a better chin.

I don't think the distance between them is all that great; Louis was certainly faster, but Arguello seemed to have a better beard. The rest is mostly semantics.

Both had crushing power in either fist, both were accomplished boxers. Both threw well in combination and both had late-round stamina, which speaks not only to their physical constitution but their dedication. Both had great killer instincts as well.

By and large, I think Arguello fought the higher caliber opposition by quite a margin. I don't even think that category is very close at all.

In terms of overall skill and who brought a more fearsome skillset to the game, I might have to side with Luois, but it's very close.

Good comparison since they had similar styles. I have to rate Louis higher based on his dominance of heayweights for 10 years. Arguello never did much after the Pryor loss.

This is a good post :good

I think a great deal of Alexis and Joe... Both were great boxers, and great people!

Anyway, you've given me something interesting to compare between the two. I've never really gotten into comparisons regarding the different weight classes and how the competition may have been better, or worse, within their own division, during different times... Anyway, it's something new to think about.

alexis arguello is one of my new favorite fighters and has moved up on my lists.......but joe louis is argueably the greatest fighter of all time plus greatest heavyweight of all time.......so he clearly takes the cake.

It is still interesting to give a "look see" when considering other weights for comparison, SuzieQ. I have never done that. You probably have, but it is something new for me. :D

...............Unquestionably better than Louis', yes. First, Baer doesn't belong on any list of greats, but that's fine; if you get Baer, I get to add a peripheral guy too........

    Marcel
    Olivares
    Escalera
    Chacon
    Limon
    Boza-Edwards
    Watt
    Mancini
    Pryor

That equals or trumps Louis' list by a good margin, I'd say. I couldn't convince you of that of course, because you've brainwashed youself into believing that because they're heavyweights, they'e automatically better. I see it as exactly the opposite. Go watch film of Ruben Olivares and tell me what he did that was so much lesser than Schmeling for example.
