A very simple reason why, it was'nt ****in safe 2:rofl what do you think roberto's going to be doing too you while yer contemplate standing still & wacking him in the guts, you're wide open, thats like handling a burglar a ladder, Duran would be chewing on yer tonsils Brave Alexis would have a few decent moments in this fight but i just see Duran's slicker defence & more versitile attacks wearing down Alexis for a brutal conclusion around 11/12, i actually see Alexis being brutaly KO'd. By 78 this was the polished gem that done the number on De Jesus & never in any lifetime does Arguello KO Duran, thats for crackheads 2 dream about:smoke
For ****s sakeatsch i was tongue in cheek you nit picking ego junkie smart arse, OK big boy FROM MEMORY, tell us all then what happended to Hector Thompson then after he'd hit Duran with some brutal body shots er, as in fight conclusion:smoke
I was responding to Pater.Don't think i even saw his post. Some people are wound up way too tight on here.Probably wound up way too tight for Bournemouth as well.
I think Duran wins a clear decision, 10-5ish. Late stoppage is possible. Arguello would earn enough respect that he wouldn't get overrun by Duran. And Duran was much more defensively skilled than Pryor so i don't see an all out war although it would be a very entertaining fight. Like Duran-Leonard I, Duran's speed of foot and gap closing abillity forces a fight that Duran is better at.
There were actually two great Arguello fights we never got to see. Arguello/Little Red at 126: AA vacated the WBA title and moved up about one month after Danny won the WBC version. Alexis was a little green at 126, and Lopez was a freaking beast. I'd take Alexis by clear UD or late TKO, but he'd have to survive some scary moments to get there. Can you imagine the fire power with these two throwing bombs at each other??? And then ofcourse we never got to see Duran/Arguello. As I recall there was no ducking or anything like that in either case. I'm sure Lopez would have taken the fight, if his handlers would let him. And we know AA/Duran nearly happened. anyway, just to bad neither came off.
There was also talk of Sanchez-Arguello before Chava died.I believe Duran ko's Arguello late.Duran handspeed and body attack wear Flaco down.People forget that Duran lost once in 60+ fights from lightweight on down. And the 2 knockdowns he suffered were both in the 1st round on 2 different occasions against DeJesus. The only real advantages that Arguello had over Duran were height and reach.People forget that Duran had problems against movers that were bigger than him. That is obviously not the problem with Arguello.
Arguello is one of my favorite fighters and one of the best of all times but I have to go with duran. He was too slick and well rounded for arguello to handle. He would outbox him and wear him down with a brutal body attack.
I also think it was a poor managerial move and matchmaking. Fernandez was **** to deal with, he was a constant nuisance for Duran for their fight and had already upset the apple cart before. Why you would put a guy who has a tendency to start slow against boxer/movers in a non-title 10 rounder with a guy who went 13 with a prime Duran is beyond me. No doubt Alexis came into this one a little underdone. And I just dont really see why he needed to fight him.
Arguello would give a good account of himself. Maybe even taking an early lead on the cards, but Duran would have too many advantages in defense and offence. 'Hands of Stone' by late rounds stoppage.
If you watch Duran at lightweight he got hit quite a bit. He believed so much in his power as an over whelming advantage he took risks he did not later take at 154 and 160. Arguello was a killer with reach on Duran and one punch KO power in either hand. In addition he was an extremely well conditioned, nasty body puncher. Don't confuse this fighter with the older, worn out version who lost to Pryor. Duran's main advantage here is his speed as Alexis' Achilles heal remains he was not the fastest man in the world. If Roberto is 100% he squeezes out a decision in a very dangerous war. However, if he is not, or if he trades with Alexis it could easily go another way.
I'm going to separate myself a bit from the group here and say i think Duran would have beaten Arguello easier than the majority think. This is the perfect example of styles mattering. Arguello's weaker points (With respect to his great strengths and abilities) fall right into Duran's strengths and his strengths are well negated by Duran's skillset and composition. He would get carved up IMO while obviously having a few moments due to his sheer greatness. Let me say i am not running down Arguello, huge fan here but his lesser points, so very hard to be taken advantage of by mere mortals have no such luck here. Alexis was always known for being quite stiff, methodical and a wee bit ponderous against some. Duran by comparison is one of the most natural and comfortable boxers to ever lace a glove. He would be one of the few with the ability (brilliance working his way in, great infighting, great defense, two handed power and variety, ability to counter Arguello's average speed) to severely pressure Arguello on a consistent basis. I think Alexis gets beaten to the punch and is a step behind in this one much of the time, assuming Duran is 100% firing and peaked. His love of controlling the pace and tempo of his fights with a measured patient start will be smashed, basically. Look for Duran to pressure and test early, soaking up anything he has to and generally make Alexis look a little awkward. I see a stoppage around the 8-10 round mark. Alexis' ATG power can't help him in this one. Duran at his best has soaked up big blows from much bigger men. Bad matchup, i just can't see it any other way.
