Arguello had more skill but I feel it would be like the Pryor v Arguello fight until Alexis catches Jeff sweet, I don`t think Fenech could take Arguello`s power that well.
It'd be an absolute classic for sure, but I can't help think that the only man walking away with it is Arguello. I think he's a little overrated at 126, and definitely better at 130 & 135, but still. He was always an all-time great. Anyway, I don't like pressure fighters vs Alexis. Continuously walking onto Arguello punches (at 126, no less) is a quick way to wake up on a stretcher. Fenech had a damn good chin, but it wasn't uncrackable. I seem to remember Mario Martinez dropping him (although that may have been a flash KD, my memory is hazy on that one), and I definitely remember Callejas hurting Fenech with a left hook. No real shame there, as both were very good fighters. However, if your chin has ANY signs of weakness, and you're rushing right at ETM like Fenech would, over 15, you have to assume that Arguello nails him. It probably happens late as AA was a pretty slow starter. I'm picking Arguello due to styles, but he's also the better fighter, so that obviously works in his favour too.
I think Fenech may be underrated technically but that doesn't mean he gets by Arguello. I'll pick Arguello by late stoppage but it's a great fight.
Jeff would come out more frantic and aggressive then even Pryor would have dared... this could easily make or break the fight for him...
Any fighter in history attacking Arguello straight on is asking to get ko'ed. Fenech would get brutally ko'ed. Fenech could win the early rds with his aggression, but in no way he sustains that. Arguello's counters to the wide open Fenech would began to show effect by the 4th 5th rd, one of those counters would eventually catch him clean and the fight would be over. Arguello wins by devastating ko before 9rds.
It‘a a funny matchup. Most agree it would be a close, competitive, entertaining fight. At the same time, the idea of the winner being anything other than a foregone conclusion is laughable.
I wouldn't rule Fenech out at 126. For all his success at 26, Arguello was still learning and really rounded into himself at 130, and then Eddie Futch added the last layer. I'm not saying that Fenech would win and Arguello is in my top 4 or 5 favorites of all time.
