Ive heard fans say that Floyd would be all wrong for Alexis due to styles because Arguello is quite slow of hand & foot & Floyd is always on the move + very fast of both hand & foot himself, I DO KNOW where they are coming from with that BUT what about the problems AA would give to FMJ ? Arguello isnt going to just stalk & get outboxed & counter-punched all night long like Corrales (God rest him) did as he has a better defence & rarely wastes a punch + AAs punches will hurt way more than chico`s & when Floyds punches do land, AA has a real good chin to absorb them. I see a tactical fight for the 1st 6 rds with FMJ landing more both to body & head but taking some good body shots along the way as he is aware of AAs power in the left hook & straight right to the head, Floyd WILL avoid those big bombs but at the price of taking some heavy stuff to the liver & mid-section. I see the last 6 rds becoming more of a `fight`as Alexis is picking up the pace, not getting discouraged by being outlanded & starts to land hurtfull looking punches to the body, he scores the odd head shot which FMJ takes well before getting on the backfoot again playing counter-puncher. The rds are close now with FMJs punch output dropping & Arguello clearly landing more frequent aswell as harder. Rd 11, Arguello lands a left hook, Floyd wobbles, AA fires in a right to the ear, Floyd takes a knee then gets up at 8 to survive to the last rd. Last rd is Arguello chasing but doing it patiently, throwing single shots, mostly to the body, aware of FMJs attempts at counters, AA starts to let the hands go once he senses that FMJ is happy not to engage & see the rd out, landing 2 of 5 or 6 thrown, Floyd throws single counters which miss, this continues until the end as Alexis lands 2 crisp left hooks , 1 to the body & 1 to the head when the bell goes as Floyd is smiling but obviously hurt, both men lift their arms high awaiting the decision. Judge 1 - 114-113 Mayweather Judge 2 - 116-111 Arguello Judge 3 - 115-112 Arguello Arguello W12 SD Mayweather :thumbsup (Thats just my view)
Floyd by pretty wide UD. Just awful stylistically for Alexis, I actually think people either tend to overrate Arguello or at least underrate Floyd when it comes to a matchup like this.
I've been saying the same thing about this fight for a long time. Here it is. If it's 12 rounds, PBF takes a comfortable UD. If it's 15 rounds, Arguello stops Floyd. This is not about whether or night PBF could be a good 15 round fighter. Personally I think he could. Floyd's problem is that we just gave a master of the championship rounds an additional 3 rounds to get his timing down and hurt Floyd.
I would fancy floyd by UD, you could never rule out arguello by stoppage however floyd has great defence and a very underrated chin so i can't really see it personally, floyd 116-112 or something close to that
Arguello is made to measure for Mayweather. It would be like the Corrales fight but without so many KDs
I probably wouldnt argue with this post, Id feel way more comfortable picking Arguello in a 15 rder but had to go with 12 as FMJ had never went 15 to judge. I had a feeling most would pick FMJ on pts, Ive heard peoples thought on this matchup before, I just always felt that they sold Arguello short in this bout, speed does indeed kill but so does power & pressure. I dont see this going like FMJ/Corrales at all, far from it.
Arguello wouldn't just stumble in to punches like Corrales. I think 130 was Arguello's best weight. He was more experienced than at 126 and a little faster than at 135. He wasn't a speed demon by any means but he wasn't so slow to be completely overwhelmed. Sure Mayweather handled a tall Corrales easily but Arguello had a different style. He'd fall behind, but probe for openings and eventually find some, especially to the body. I'll say it's a tossup over 12, but I'd give it to Arguello over 15.
The seventies were a different type of boxing....much rougher, and the fans expected you "to fight". If Floyd fights his "lay on the ropes technique" down in Nicaragua or in Mexico City, then he will be forced to fight, or get booed out of the ring. If Emanuel Augustus was Floyd's toughest opponent, as supposedly he said per ESPN, well, 'nuff said. Arquello's oppenents of Chacon, Escalera, Castillo, plus others are much stronger than Floyd's at 130 lbs IMO.
Corrales was an entertaining fighter, but I don't think he was that good. Definitely not great - a clear cut below the elite at 130. As such, Corrales/Arguello comparisons are off base...Chico always had a problem with defense, and his heart was far better than his chin.
I actually think Floyd's resume at 130 is good, not saying that its better than Arguello's, but a good resume. Corrales, G.Hernandez, Chavez, C.Hernandez, Manfredy, all these guys were good contenders and some were very good wins imo. Arguello's was very good aswell, with his est being, Navarette, Escalera twice, Limon, Chacon and Castillo, Arguello's better though imo the single best win of either man's is Corrales, that's debatable i know, but i feel that even though Corrales was very flawed it still takes something very good to beat him, the man was tough as nails and never stopped trying. Arguello would definitely stop him though, far too open for the kind of bombs he would be able to time.
