This was a terrific fight. I'll never quite believe how well Pryor took the right hands of Arguello. Some of he hardest, perfectly thrown, flush shots I have ever seen land without ending in a knockout. Unbelievable display of will and punch resistance on the part of Pryor, and even Arguello, who also took a hell of a lot of punishment in this fight. Was the fight really that close on the scorecards though? I felt it was always competitive, with Arguello landing freight train shots down the stretch, but I had it very one sided on the cards. Round 1 - 10-9 Pryor Round 2 - 10-9 Pryor Round 3 - 10-9 Pryor Round 4 - 10-9 Pryor Round 5 - 10-9 Arguello Round 6 - 10-9 Pryor Round 7 - 10-9 Pryor Round 8 - 10-9 Arguello Round 9 - 10-9 Pryor Round 0 - 10-9 Pryor Round 11 - 10-9 Arguello Round 12 - 10-9 Pryor Round 13 - 10-9 Pryor If some people disagree on some of the rounds, feel free to say. I'll rewatch the round now, because my scorecard seems a bit to one sided in context of the whole fight. General thoughts?
heres my one Arguello: 5,8,9,10,12,13 Pryor: 1,2,3,4,6,7,11 Total: 124-123 Pryor Thought it was very close as you can see, i thought Arguello definitly landed the cleaner shots that off set the workrate of pryor. Also later on i thought Alexis was the better ring general and controlled it better. Definilyl Pryor had it early like both our cards show, the middle rounds are closer with Pryor easing off abit and boxing these are even basically as Pryors boxing troubles AA but AA's solid punches off sets Pryors slowened workrate.Defintly after the 10th round Arguello starts taking over with those body shots (that we didnt see enough of) this is my favrouite fight of all time
Arguello vs Pryor I is my second favorite fight of all time, taking a back seat to the barn burner Morales vs. Barrera I. I'm going to go back and review the fight and see if cases can indeed be made for the fight being that close. Often times, Pryor would put a clinic on, landing barrages of punches only for Alexis to then land a freight train right hand. That isn't enough to for him to win the rounds in my book, but I'll have a look.
its a close fight definitly, kinda personal preference on parts. also Barrera vs Morales 1 is my second favrouite fight
Review of Round 5: I can see why you scored the round for Alexis, and maybe I did too on second viewing. Although Pryor threw more shots, they were mostly jabs and either falling short or hitting gloves. He had a good finish to the round, but Alexis threw and landed the right hand multiple times and inflicted the most damage. Arguello round. :good
Review of round 9: Clear Pryor round for me, still. Okay, the two biggest shots of the round were landed by Arguello, but it was all Pryor otherwise - who also finished the stronger. Can't budge on this one. round 10. Still finding it hard to give Alexis this one. Sure, the biggest punch of the round was by Alexis again but Pryor finished stronger, and was landing jab. Side note: that uppercut was a thing of beauty.
It really depends how you score rounds, Arguello landed bombs but Pryor seemed to outland him 10-1 at times so I gave the vast majority of the rounds to Pryor as he outlanded Arguello in every round. I also think it was more 1 sided than people give Pryor credit for, Arguello landed occasional right hands that shook Pryor to his boots but outside of that Pryor was outboxed, outlanded, and outbrawled, which broke Arguello down
Absolutely. I just gave round 12 to Pryor too, even though..again, the biggest shot landed was from Arguello. That's why the fight was so great. Pryor was winning a lot of rounds, but Arguello seemed to land the biggest shot in each of them. Round 11 was a blowout for Arguello, and in round 13, he landed a right hand that would have taken out any other 140lbs fighter that ain't named Pryor or Chavez, in my opinion. Insane.
I was too young to watch that 1 live but I'm sure anyone watching it live viewers must have wondered if those big occasional shots of Arguellos was enough to KO Pryor. Arguello was a much bigger puncher than Pryor but I don't think the smaller number he landed were enough to win most the rounds.
I agree. But I wouldn't consider it a great "one sided fight". Pryor was wobbled by some of those right hands, it was a competitive fight where Pryor was effective at landing more shots, but when Arguello landed his, they were huge shots that would take out most guys. Seriously, I've never seen shots land like that before and for there to be little to no reaction. Pryor was a force of nature during those times. The second best fight I've ever seen, I don't know how people have it very close on the cards - maybe they could explain a bit more? I tried to give the rounds a second viewing but I only changed my tune on 1 round - so I gave Arguello...3 rounds out of 13.
