It's one of the most famous fantasy fights, and I'm sure it's been done on here before, so I'd like to know who you pick and why.
I like Sanchez at Featherweight. I think Arguello peaked at 130. Arguello got beat by Marcel at 126 (granted it was his first big fight). I just think Sanchez could counterpunch and pick his spots. He had a great chin also, which would be tested on several ocassions. Arguello was awesome at 130 and actually had adequate foot speed/lateral movement at that weight (as opposed to his 135/140 days). I'd take Arguello at 130 due to his awesome resume and lack of evidence that Sanchez would've carried the extra weight well.
Say Sanchez would have carried the weight perfectly well, who do you pick if both are at their best? Who does the style-match up favor?
Sanchez by late KO. We all know he had a rock iron chin and didn't wilt under Gomez's bombs....I think the fact that he was really mobile and threw punches in bunches would give Alexis trouble.
Sanchez would win. A good mover/counter-puncher has always been trouble for Arguello, and Sanchez was one who would also be able to battle him effectively in the trenches where Arguello generally thrives, for however long the bout would take place there. Overall, I think Sanchez would control the pace, counter, and generally outbox Arguello for the Decision.
I thought the marcel fight was highly competitive actually. To the point it possibly could have gone either way.Marcel was badly hurt a few times too. Ernesto had better pure boxing ability and defence than Sanchez.Quicker hands too. sanchez always took a fair amount of punches, plus he liked to be in range aggressively counterpunching. He could do it but it wouldn't be easy.
I also think Sal would have difficulties in purely outboxing Arguello, as stated by Mantequilla. There were many "uneasy" moments for Marcel in that bout. See some momentum shifts in this one, & the outcome could come down to if & when Alexis does land that right hand, and how Sanchez reacts to it. If Sal does a Pryor, bobble head routine...... I'll tell people that Salvador Sanchez feels no pain, and is immune to punishment.
At 130, I can`t see Sanchez being able to hold of Arguello. At 126, he`d had to box a perfect fight tom pull it off, BOX. here`s the rub, Sanchez wasn`t a speedster, and he was hittable( Patrick Ford, Nelson, Laporte)And he also like to mix it up. wasn`t a safety first fighter. He can`t hurt Arguello, his chin was too sturdy at this weight.I just think that given Arguello`s consistent body work. He would get to Sanchez, late. He could box well too. Sanchez would have to be absolutely perfect to beat him. Arguello would find a way to get to him.
