Whatever, Pernell proved his jaw was good enough to take it, even if Arguello lands anything (which is a big if, meaning flush clean punches).
Fair enough, what lightweight would you say Pernell beat that hit as hard or harder than Arguello? Better still, hit as hard or harder and share his same class as a fighter? I think Whitaker would outbox him with speed too but some of you seeem to think it's simply a matter of turning up. Arguello still had enormous power at 135 and was a thinking mans fighter, which made up for much of his lack of speed.
Prime for prime, Whitaker outboxes Arguello and wins a 3 point, bare minimum decision. Arguello would win some rounds in this fight and could have Pernell in big trouble if he connects with his right hand. Pernell is too elusive for Arguello and most likely avoids the danger punches.
You are right. What I meant was, that he was great when he defended his titles (126, 130, 135) and therefore he would have been a hard boxer to defeat while he was at his best. The three boxers you mentioned are very difficult for Arguello....the only thing that I can say is that he would have a good chance against them, but I would favour the three of them against Arguello.
Cheers mate, good to see a big Arguello fan putting him forth to be honest. He deserves all the praise he gets.
I love Arguello, but he can't knock Pea out and he can't win on points. Sweat Pea UD, and a comfortable one at that. Pea was already one of the best, no use giving him a size advantage.
In a 12 round fight, could easily see Pernell winning a somewhat lopsided decision over Alexis. But if this is a 15 rounder, odds are that Pernell will get caught, and when he does, he probably will not get up.In this scenario, Alexis would stop Pernell in 14 rounds.
Which fighter EVER stopped Pea in his prime.. shoot even for most of his past prime days? He's been in there with some solid punchers and never gotten KO'd.. yet alexis will do what other failed to do against a prime pea... just don't buy it whether it's 12 or 15
I think it's pretty unanimous. But Whittaker for me too. Arguello is one of my favourites (so is Sweet Pea) but Whittaker is a really bad style for him. On top of that Whittaker was brilliant himself.
