Arguello vs. Whitaker

Arguello had significant height and reach, feasted on southpaws, typically aimed for the sternum on his straight shots, and had a deadly body attack. Make this one for the championship distance, a limit Whitaker never attempted by a margin of three rounds, and he either fades from that body attack, or gets taken out late.

Vilomar Fernandez beat him once by running like a thief for ten rounds and making no mistakes, but after that distance, Alexis was closer than a peak Duran, Hilmer Kenty, and Howard Davis, Jr. were after ten. (In fact, most believe Fernandez defeated Howard over 12, and many think Vilomar should have gotten the 15 round verdict over Kenty as well.) Over the championship distance, Arguello's ten round MD loss to Fernandez (which referee Mercante scored a draw) is actually evidence in his favor. (In a mere ten rounder, I'd probably bet the mortgage on Pernell.)

 

WTF? I tried to cut a highlight video of his to samba music and it didn't fit at all. :?

 

But BE, you've goto use the right music, he's much more of a waltzing type of mover, put the right music on and you have his rhythm obviously samba would never work. Whitaker would need to have his sparring partners box to a Waltz when preparing for Arguello

 

I could possibly see Arguello putting Whitaker in a daze like Roger Mayweather did if Whitaker gets a little too brazen in the inside exchanges, but it's hard to see Arguello taking him out.

It's hard to see Arguello being close enough after 12 rounds to catch up even with some late round knockdowns and big rounds either.

Nor will Arguello with his pace cause Whitaker who had very good stamina to wilt late.

 

I dont know Arguello was such a vicious bodypuncher.12 rounds maybe Pea but noway 15 rounds-all Arguello.

 

Over 12? Pea all day.

Over 15? Pick em. Pernell never had gas issues, but 3 more rounds is a whole new deal, and Alexis was very, very good in those championship rounds.

Whitaker is just better, though. Better all around skills(And that is saying something against a fighter as good as Arguello) with more versatility. Whitaker was wily, hard to time, damn fast, and harder still to hit. I don't think Alexis would get enough done early in a 12 rounder to get over a massive lead Pea would build with his jab.
