Is there a distinct difference between watching a fight on TV and sitting ringside when judging a fight? In light of the Berto/Collazo affair, why is there such a disparity between us and the judges?
Personally I think the opposite. I'd remove judges from ringside and get them to judge based on what we see. Our view is much better than theirs.
Yes, there's a difference. Judges will look at body language, facial expressions, physical damage, blood. Stuff we can't see. The velocity and impact of the punches.. Sweat flying.. One guy getting moved by the force of the other guy's blows.. Mouthpieces getting knocked out.. On the other hand, the perspective you get sitting right on top of a ring from a set position with the fighters turning their backs on you, twisting, bending, and moving around a wide field of view at high speed, doesn't always offer the clarity of various camera angles instantly cutting to the perfect spot. Microphones focused inside the ring isolate the sounds of the fight for the TV audience. Judges have the high pitched screams and bass of the crowd in their ears.
Ringside is a much more accurate portrayal ... San Rafael explained why... you can see much more... and the physical damage is more apparent .
If judges judge based on facial expressions, blood and body language, then even more reason to put them in front of a TV screen, because these aren't criterias for judgement. And you can see a mouthpiece get knocked out on TV... There's no reason to have them ringside, they don't get a good enough view in which to judge the fight. If they watched it on TV, where you're always at the optimum angle, they'd score fights better.
It'd be worth a trial. Get judges to judge from ringside and then by watching TV and see which was the best decision based on the general consensus.
I agree with onourway. TV gives you the absolute best angle to see punches land. If you miss them on TV, you will sure as **** miss them with your view blocked and distorted.
I usually score fights very similar to the judges. Almost always. However there are certain fights where there is clear corruption.
You could argue either one is the better way to judge a fight. I have seen arguements that say judging a fight from a T.V screen, especially if the coverage and quality is good, is better and they seem reasonable. Anyone who has seen a fight from ringside will tell you there are advantages and disadvantages to it. At the end of the day though the fight is judged from ringside and the best way to appreciate where the judges are coming from is to sit there.
Eugenia Williams gives round 5 to Evander v Lewis, then realizes her mistake when watching it on tv... I'd even give them access to compubox numbers too..
Compubox is no more reliable, in fact I dont put much faith in it. Ive always thought going back to having the ref give in a card isnt a bad idea...Or maybe have one of the judges in a sealed room watching a T.V, there are problems with that aswell however.
