I know everyone looks at past boxers and say they were the greatest but in pretty much every sport - modern athletes are better due to sports science developments, training method improvements and nutrition.

Look at events that use a stopwatch like swimming and running - modern athletes are way faster than counterparts in 60s and 70s (erm flo jo aside)

If boxing had an equivalent tool to the stopwatch to judge head to head who was better the matter would be clear but alas it doesnt and a lot of people's judgement seems to be based on the heart due to a lack of actual scientific comparison.

This isnt a statement of fact just curious as to people's opinions really.

    Hell no !!

Because with all the advancments in science it does nothing for the most prestigous division in boxing and thats the heavy weight division ..

Lets also look at the fragile state of certain boxers ..How many boxers today have hand problems that prevent them from fighting ?

Also do you honestly think with all these advancements in science of today's boxers could last a full 15 rds ? I have yet to see one fighter of today that would convince me of just that ..

your a newbie, so i'm not surprised. yes, in many sports records are broken, but you really can't compare marathon running with a full contact sport as in boxing. of course there are several future atg's today, but rules were different back then when 15 rounds could make a difference in a fight and pushed fighters alittle more. lets face it, many of today's fighters can barley get through 10 today and i'm talking about the elite. another case i'll argue is well, what if we gave yesterday's champions the technology that is available today? i have love for today's fighters, but it takes alot more than modern science to be an atg. i highly recommend you look up Sugar Ray Robinson's greatest hits and compare them to, oh lets say floyd. look up Salvador Sanchez, who always breathed through his nose and american's gave him the nickname "Mr. Pulmones" or Mr. Lungs, and Fighting Harada, who only hardcore fans know is probably the best asian boxer of all time, while many that don't know him of course will say manny is without a doubt, and compare both to the pacman who i got love for, but i'd easily pick those other 2 to beat pacman anytime. imo

I actually agree, generally speaking of course. Sports progress and move with the times. I can see why the fighters from the past are often thought of as more worthy of "greatness" as they fought more and achieved more, also people like to look back and appreciate fighters from past generations. They get over rated and modern fighters under rated. When speaking of head to head match ups, I think the modern fighters would come out on top and surprise many. I think the casual fan usually wants to know who the best boxers were, not who has the greatest resume. For example I seen a few people recently say Bernard Hopkins was not in their top 100, I don't know if there's been 100 boxers who have mastered the sport as well as he has, doesn't sound right to me. All just my opinion of course which could change as I have an open mind over it.

Ok lets say that the Joe Louis of his time had to meet him self, but the diffrence being that the other version have had perfect nutrition, training plus 3 - 6 month to prepere for the fight, watch DVDs and study the style of his older version. Who wins ?

It has always been like this in all sports, athletes first get recognition years after they retieres...

Some fans have a romantic idea of their sport, especially boxingfans IMO!

i think they are. I mean you can have this debate about any sport, especially footy players, for example would have George best cut it in todays premiership. the advances in technology are so great now that there must be some kind of advantages that todays sports men from any sport have over sportsmen from the 60's and 70's etc

No throwbacks? You must be joking. Did you happen to see Bernard Hopkins last weekend? The man is everything that it is to be a Throwback, and nothing less.

The only reason things have improved so much is because the gear athletes where now is much lighter. One stood on a running shoe from ages ago weighs more than the entire shoe does these days I was watching this on the telly not so long back. How do you think 23 records were broke at the last olympics. Was it because the 23 best swimmers ever were at those Olympics or was it because they had made rapid advancements in the swims suits and made wider lanes for the swimmers to swim in.

I don't think it's so much technology that has improved todays fighters, but due to more knowledge and the pioneers that have passed it on. Plus humans getting bigger, faster, stronger. And no offence but, the posters with the adament replies such as "NO!!!!" "Hell no" "Never" without anything to back it up, sound insecure over their opinion because they wouldn't want to believe otherwise.

Talent is talent it does not matter if they are better or not (which I do not think they are because boxing used to be the most popular sport in the world back then) but it is the natural ability and determination of a fighter that makes them adored by fans and the excitement of fights that make fans want to watch them in the first place not all this rubbish you see from the very skilled but still over rated Mayweather who is all about money.

Im a newbie in that i havnt spent ages writing one word posts and getting totally involved in nonsense clocking up my post count. Not a newbie to being into boxing.

Obviously if yesteryears boxers had the same training techniques then that changes the question somewhat. I ask merely because people hark back to the greats but in pretty much every sport where achievements of the past can be viewed purely through recordable methods and compared directly to modern day achievements then the modern day athlete wins.

George best would no doubt be a great natural talent but probably couldnt cope with the pace of football today due to his off the field lifestyle reducing his peak fitness.

The only things i can think of that might go in past boxers favour is that:

a greater pool of people back in the day actually boxed so maybe more scope for greater talent to be found (though i have no actual stats on this)

Also other sports with money incentives nowerdays might attract certain athletes that could be great boxers thus reducing the modern pool of talent.

The promotional/money side of the game name makes it an unfair playing field for some talent coming up and a mine field for finding the best.
