Or maybe - "Clash of the Spare Tires!" Just put a bag of Pork Rinds in all 4 corners and make them fight for them.
I completely agree, I just think he proved his point with the boxing clinic he put on for Holyfield. It would be a shame for his last fight to be a defeat by the likes of Arreola (not saying its a foregone conclusion but quite possible). As a Toney fan, I'd rather he go out with a win over Maskaev but if he stopped after Hoyfield it would have been even better.
I have just read that Arreola's agent confirmed the Maskaev - Arreola fight for October 3. Paul Williams faces the WBO champ on the undercard. With that being said, I believe Toney's career is over now. I have lost respect for Goossen. Toney deserved that last shot and Goossen would not give it to him and will rather go forward with this farce. Shame on him.
I agree here, if Toney can't land a shot at Arreola within the next few months he should call it a day. Goossen, who has build his entire new formed company on Toney's success from 2002-2006, should have provided Toney one last payday before retirement. But then again, business is business, I guess that Maskaev qualifies better for a spectecular Arreola ko victory....
I tend to disagree here, people expect that the Toney match would be better yes on paper, But Toney would not have a chance against a hungry young Arreola, yes Toney would last a lot more than chinny Maskaev, but he too old and fat to even outbox this guy, remeber fat peter with less skill than Arreola outbox Toney, even a shot Oquendo outbox him. Not toney would not hurt Arreola, but Maskaev can, yes Maskaev can win at least by a lucky punch, but Toney i dont seee a chance to beat Arreola, so Maskaev is a better oponent for Arreola because at least he have a slim chance, and by the way the fight with Makaev would be good, because a ko is for sure in this fight, in the toney fight it would be 90 percent chance teh fight would end on the scorecards.
I agree with the thread-starter. There's no question that James Toney is faded. Still, I think he has left more than Oleg Maskaev, who is shot. At least Toney is still durable and would give Arreola work for a 12 rds, while chinny Maskaev will most probably get knocked out again. Toney is a legend and deserves this one last chance, especially now that (according to credible accounts) he is in decent fighting shape - we wouldn't see a blubbery Toney in the ring again. This fight would oppose an old, past his best master against an up and coming young buck. And who knows, Toney might still pose Arreola a lot of problems with his awkward style. Arreola has never faced anybody like Toney before. Fighting Toney would at least be a good lesson for Arreola, he'd gain a lot of experience, instead of just another quick KO. As for those saying that Arreola vs. Toney would be boring, I don't think that would be a given. Toney - Oquendo was a shitty fight because Oquendo held and ran the whole evening, while Toney had to chase him, which he can't do anymore at this age. That fight being so boring was certainly not Toneys fault. Oquendo always makes fights boring. Arreola would stand in front of Toney, making for some action. Of course there won't be a KO, but we don't watch boxing solely for KOs, do we? The outcome of Arreola-Maskaev seems clear to me, and that's not very exciting. Goossen and Arreola don't want to take risks with this fight. Both Arreola and Toney are very popular in Cali and would pack the Staples center, I doubt Arreola-Maskaev can do that.
Well, Arreola does not look like someone who is really "hungry" . And while Oquendo was past prime when he outboxed Toney, I think he still was better boxer than Arreola. As to outboxing Arreola... well, I am afraid you are right and it is too late for Toney. I agree Maskaev was probably chosen to make Arreola look better. "Big O" always has puncher chance, but otherwise Arreola should get the job done in 6 rounds. On the other hand, Toney has "boxers chance" - he is almost guaranteed to survive the distance, and I am not sure if Arreola would look good if he is forced to fight 10/12 rounds.
Wake up pal, this is 2009 - Maskaev has virtually no chance against the much busier Arreola. The 2009 version of Maskaev is probably the slowest hw in the top 50, has a poor defense and zero durability. Toney is pretty shot as well, but a natural talent like him can also always handle himself inside the ring.
I believe that Arreollas style is made for Toney and if Toney has anything left he should be able to outbox him. He should also come same shape he was against Rahman to ensure he doesn’t get outworked. Maskaev how ever brings nothing in table and will be knocked out in first or second round.
Man people still belives in Toney, the guy is done just skip him, He is a legend but that legend was in the 90's, and got a second wind then but now is nothing left in the tank.
You are being blinded by your personnal bias. That's a very long litany of bull**** without substance. :yep WTF is hard to understand . . . Oleg is rated #4 and Arreola#1 . . . and Toney is rated #11. Why would Arreola waste his time with a guy rated # 11?
I appreciate what Toney has accomplished but we have to accept the fact that he's already way out of it.
Russian bum? Wasn't that the same thing some scumbag was yelling at the weigh-in of his rematch with Rahman?, we all know who was exposed as the bum after that fight.
