Yeah he was a hype job, said it from the start his skills made someone crude like Arreola look skilled, no jab, no variety, same predictable attack. I wouldn't even favour him over Dubois right now. I thought after an old Takam exposed him to some degree that people on here would realise they were wrong but no some here just double downed and still proclaimed him as the future of the division which was baffling.
When Arslanbek Makhmudov failed to knock out Carlos Takam, I knew his story was far from a championship story. I couldn't predict the rest
Tbh he improved abit after Takam only to regress. The hype he got in Saudi got to his head and he tried too hard to play Mr Scary out there.
Maybe it was the level of competition but I swear he used to use his lead hand a lot more effectively than of late. His fight against Takam, then the other guy, then Kabayel it just looked like he was going full caveman, swinging for the fences without any setup. That was a far cry from his earlier fights where he used to use his lead a bit like Bivol, framing his opponents to deliver OH rights and uppercuts. Always annoying when fighters fall in love with their power and neglect the delivery mechanism.
Against what kind of opponents he did look improved? Against basketball player with absolutely ZERO boxing skills or against 5'11'' LHW who was KOed by Beybut Shumenov years ago?
He did use to frame, guard manipulate with the lead hand a lot, much like Hrgovic does, to set up the right hand. But he was doing it against poor opposition who stood in front of him and allowed him to do it. Kabayel was constantly moving in and out not giving Makh a stationary target to frame against and the one time he tried to collar tie Kabayel, Kabayel just rolled under and out and fired back. Fact is he stepped up in class and was exposed. He's not every fast, that ultra wide stance means he can't move well, backwards or forwards, he doesn't move his head after he throws which is why Kabayel was countering him with ease and when Makh finally had an opponent who fired back and put him under pressure, he looked very vulnerable. as he has zero defensively skills.
