Yeah he didn't look good but this happens to most prospects on the way up against certain styles and he'll look better against different ones.

I could sense Takam was going to get dropped in round 7 (IIRC) when he started getting really aggressive and put the pressure on because it was creating more openings for Mak.

Hopefully this sees the end to all the Makhmudov hype we had from some people here. I said before he could be another Price or Ajagba. Well it seems he might not be that bad as at least he beat Takam, albeit the oldest, heaviest version we've seen to date.

But as expected Takam the perennial gatekeeper exposed any limitations that he had and he had many. He's far too easy to hit, his offense is his defence, he shipped far too many OH rights. His doesn't move well, he adopts far too wide a stance to generate power but it limits his ability to move. His jab is non existent, he relies far too much on using the lead hand to only frame and control his opponent to set up the right hand, he needs more variety. His inside game is limited, hence all the leaning and clinching, he always tries to push you off to get space to throw but if he can't get that space he then clinches.

Right now I'd put him on the level of someone like Dubois. Big powerful, decent chin, but very limited skill set that will be exposed when he moves up in class.

Sounds like Makh didn't show much more than what he did against Wach, where I was pretty disappointed in what I saw - sure he has big power, but fairly limited aside from that.

I was certain that this wouldn't go the distance, especially with a well-past-prime Takam @42!!

Makhmudov has the defensive radar of a cold war era statue.

    Yep

Would have tied up Takam all night and then KOd him with a leaping left hook.

    Agree with all of that

Simply put - he has fallen in love with his power.

I've had problems watching the full fight. I only could watch the final rounds and some of the first rounds. But since what I've watched, makhmudov has been widely exposed in this fight, plus there is an amazing KO waiting for him around the corner. His defense is trash and he doesnt like them when he gets hit... the result of this combo is obvious. It's only a matter of time.

Regarding takam, his boxing deserves better results than what he got in his career. It's a pitty he doesnt have a better record, because his boxing is way better than his record.

I'm not surprised at all. Unfortunately I fell asleep before the fight, but I was just saying to somebody that Takam had a good chance to pull off a upset. He always seems to come slightly short. It's just what he is.

This 'next' gen bunch is looking very very weak

We should be thankful for AJ, Fury, Wilder and Usyk
There are many others contenders who are better than any of the upcomers

Yeah l was thinking the same thing. Yoka, Hrgovic, Dubois, Ajagba, Kownacki and now Makhmudov were supposed to have been a new wave of fresh young talent that would challenge the top guys. But Joyce is the only one who's been able to reach legit contender status and he's got a tough fight in Parker next if he loses this new generation is a bust.

Can you imagine 4-5 years from now we could still have Fury, Usyk, Joshua and even Wilder at the top. I hope someone else breaks through and we don't have a bunch of old heavies at the top.

Lets not forget other up-and-coming heavyweights had their poor fights.

Fury was knocked down by Pajkic, and should have lost to John McDermott.

Wilder was knocked down by low-level journeymen in Nichols and Sconiers.

Makhmudov won, after facing a adversity for the first time in his pro career. That adversity will make him a better fighter, he'll do better in his next fight.

Makhmudov said after the fight he was surprised by Takam's resistance. “Honestly, I didn't expect him to be in such good shape, because I saw his recent fights and he was getting tired (in the later rounds). That's why I was in no rush (to stop him). But I'm happy because I had never done 10 rounds," Makhmudov said.
