Ring Mag had a 7-8 page article about this back in I think August, whatever edition had Andre Ward on the cover, bashing Mercante pretty good. I agree, if the towel comes in and the corner quits, thats it...its not up to the ref. Foreman was a sitting duck, especially being a fighter with light fists, fighting on one leg. Mercante has seen how many die in the ring? I know 1 for sure and I think a second after the fight. He should be banned.

So if the rules allow let them kill each other? :patsch I'm seriosly worried about the mental condition of those who voted "we want blood".

exactly. Mercante is hack who is more concerned with looking good in front of the camera than actually reffing the fight properly. and this isn't his only controversial fight. Whitaker Hurtado comes to mind. this video is revealing

He just allowed Foreman to take more punishment. Foreman relies on Movement and using the ring. With him being immobile, left him a sitting duck for Cotto's Power. Shouldv'e stayed out of it.

I think Foreman himself was glad that Mercante didn't stop the fight and let him go out on his sheild. That being said, its the ref's job to protect the fighter from unneccasary punishment... and sometimes that means protecting the fighter from himself. Mercante is oldschool and I think he wanted to make sure the fans get their money's worth... but that being said, he should've stopped the fight. Especially when Foreman's corner threw in the towel.

Reminds me of Earl Morton in Martinez-Williams 2, constantly talking to the fighters instead of loud, strict boxing commands. His positioning is terrible and Martinez almost clashes into him which makes Morton say "damn wohooa... lotta holding", and Williams gets KTFO moments later. Entirely possible that it distracted Paul.

Also the most clueless, idiotic commentary ever, and they managed to pull that off in less than 2 rounds. So stupid **** happens in the ring sometimes.

    unprofessional all around.

I also don't like refs being able to override the towel thrown by a corner. nobody knows the fighter better than the corner. Mercante should have gotten the clue and stopped the damn fight

I'd assume this is to stop suspicious/controversial decisions. Example: Betting on their own fights. Betting on specific rounds, etc. It is the ref's job to know when to stop a fight, if a ref was not allowed to overrule the corners judgment...we may see a few more scandals in boxing regarding this subject.
