It's a known fact to any good boxing trainer that he should not only throw the towel, but also enter the ring forcibly if he wants to stop a fight.
It was still a heated fight, it's Foreman's knee/ life, and he wasn't taking useless punishment (was still firing back). Pac was damaging Cotto much more 2 rounds prior to the stoppage than whenever the fight was stopped...He wasn't answering back..Thus it wasn't that bad of a stoppage. Foreman wanted to continue, did continue, and said nothing about quitting. I think the ref did an excellent job of letting Foreman fight. Could he have been hurt seriously, or hurt his knee seriously? Sure. BUT it's a damn fight, it was his championship, his pride, his no loss record...If the guy wants to fight LET HIM FIGHT! Also whenever the towel was thrown in, and he said "I'm not letting you guys stop this fight!" He also walked over to Foreman and asked if he was okay. I'm sure if Foreman would have said otherwise he would have let it stopped.
You know what, I was back and forth with the issue due to the confusion, but the reality is it was a hard decision and he handled it well. Because of the confusing denial coming from the corner, leaving up to the fighter was a good decision. The stupidity was showing more on Foreman's side than Merchante's, although I respect him fully for his heart and fighting spirit.
I actually agree. Arthur Merchante is an attention ***** *******. Even before the knee incident, he was whoring it up with his stupid instruction every few minutes, at times he stopped watching the fighters to talk to the corner, I've never seen this kind of bs before. But what I really disagree on is not stopping the fight after the slips. I mean the man obviously cannot continue. Foreman is a fighter, he is losing, he's not gonna ask to stop the fight. If he does, he'll never be back after this loss, ever. But acting tough and continuing helps his case to get back to headlining fights once again, keeping the fans on his side. That being said, the fight was a joke after that. Merchante kept a man who couldn't fight in the ring, Cotto, being a nice guy, took it easy on him, especially when Foreman was losing his balance, he'd back off, and a lot of his punches in the 7th seemed soft. In the 8th, he realised he had a job to do and finished it anyway, but you could still see he was holding back right up until the very end (after the towel incident). This fight shouldve been stopped after the second slip by the ref. It was no longer a fight, it was a disgrace. Props to Foreman for having balls of steel. Props to Cotto for being a gentleman. Screw Merchante.
The way the ref refused to stop the fight and also kept encouraging foreman to continue seemed like he may have had a few bucks on this fight.
I don't get it why everyone thinks he did a good job, foreman was losing the fight and had a blown out knee,he ignores a thrown in towel and takes away cottos victory risking a dramatic ending and poor foreman getting his leg ruined. It was a risky move and he should have stopped it in 8.
