TS is dumb. He did the right thing. Why should Yuri lose his belt because someone threw the towel, but nobody wants to say who threw in the towel? He wasn't taking serious punishment from Cotto at the time someone threw in the towel.
**** outta here. Thanks to Macante we didnt get another bull**** ending to an already crappy year for boxing. Yuri is the man, he was outclassed, yet showed BALLS, he isnt a little ***** like Cintron. He deserved to be able to stay in their and go out on his own will. Macante knew Yuri wasn't done and wanted to continue.....What he did was awesome.
Mercante was right. A thrown towel doesn't stop the fight. The only grey area was whether he should have given the DQ when Foremans second got into the ring. Either way, the TS is an idiot.
Exactly, anyone who truley believes Foreman WANTED to continue is stupid, or thinks Foreman is stupid. Foreman at that point had no chance in hell to win and everyone knew it. He wasn't gonna win a decision, he was down on points and wasn't going to outbox Cotto w/o his footwork (he wasn't even doing it with both feet). He wasn't gonna knock Cotto out, I mean he has no power and now can't even pivot in his punches, he's not knocking anyone out. He was just there to be KOed. He knew it. But he also knew he couldn't quit, and share the fate of Victor Ortiz. Ortiz has ODLH backing him, keeping him relevant despite the quit work, Foreman doesn't have that luxery, he quits and he's done as a fighter. Of course he's gonna ask to continue, but anyone could see he didn't really want to. Merchante was pushing him into it, instead of doing his job and ending a fight when it ceases being competative, and becomes a needlessly dangerous situation. Boxing is a dangerous sport, I know, but it becomes needlessly dangerous when one fighter loses the capacity to win, and thats where the ref needs to stop the fight. Horrible decision making by him. Hats off to Foreman for being a man regardless.
A towel coming in doesn't alter any of that though. Either Mercante thinks the fight is OK to continue or he doesn't.
the fight shoulda been stopped after that towel throw. why would fans want to see a fight that is not competitive anymore. Yuri is at a big disadvantage there and I can see Cotto holding back his attack as a show of respect for Yuri's courage. The ref is wrong because there's no point to continue the fight. Fans are not that barbaric!
Agreed. My beef wasn't with the towel, it was with the ref not stopping it after the second slip/it becoming obvious that Foremen could not fight. My first post on this thread makes that case.
Anyone who wanted to want the fight to continue after Foreman fell a second time with no contract whatsoever is just thirsty for blood. 1. The guy appears to have a serious injury that can be aggravated if he continues to move on it. 2. The guy is way down on the cards and can't punch with two good legs. How's he going to punch when he can't even sit down on it? 3. The guy was a stationary target that could have been seriously hurt. 4. The guys TRAINER threw the towel in. The fighter is rarely going to quit on their own, it's the trainer's job to protect them. He was getting set up for a brutal KO. Foreman could have been badly concussed if Cotto decided to headhunt.
The rules of boxing say a thrown towel doesn't stop the fight. Simple as that. Did the fight suddenly become not competitive at the exact moment the towel came in? Its Mercantes job to end then fight when he sees fit, whether thats before the towel came in, or after the towel came in, but not because the towel came in.
1) Thats not what you said in your original post though, is it? 2) Most refs choose to just remove the towel rather than DQ a fighter as they don't know who threw it into the ring.
