Mercante is a fan friendly referee but he likes to impose his will too much at times. I'm not fond of his personality type. He's like an angry version of Steve Smoger who's constantly trying to prove his toughness. Arturo loves the big stage and it shows for better or worse.
Smoger is smoother and less aggressive. He doesn't feel the need to interject himself at every opportunity.
Merchante followed the rules but disobeyed tradition. Every ref would have ended this.I guarantee you Smoger would have as well. Merchante admitted after the match that someone in the corner (prob. one of the assistant trainers) threw in the towel. If that's the case, the fight ought to be stopped becuause the corner knows their fighter best. I highly doubt the towel came from a spectator because that would have came out....i.e., security would have hauled that person away. Has there even been a precedent for a corner throwing in the towel, the ref seeing it and making the fight go on anyway?
Mercante would not cheat for Williams. I am tired of William's cheating to win a fight. Martinez kicked his arse. Margarito beat Williams' into a bloody mess. Cintron was kept from knocking Williams out. Rematch now!
Mercante put on an old school, classic refereeing clinic tonight. I saw not ONE flaw in his outing as the third man in the ring. True boxing fans appreciate the effort of the majority of the refs we see on the major networks (there's a VERY good reson why they are reffereeing, while you and I, in loser fashion, spend our lives blogging about it). There several out there that boxing would be worse without. Those guys are there for a reason. Those who THINK they are boxing fans, yet bash more refs than not....know **** about boxing. You MMA fans know who you are, and you have absolutely NO understanding for the word "sport", in too many ways to name in one post.
so...did foreman continue because he wanted to fight on...or because he was on the spot... with the ref straight up asking him if he wants to continue?
I remember he was telling Clottey to "suck it up" and to "walk it off" after he got slammed by Cotto and was on the floor writhing. "Be like a champ, go ahead and walk it off."
I actually thought he was encouraging him. Mercante showed up ready for 12 rounds just like the fighters, apparently. I don't think for a second that he trying to attract attention. I think they did ther josb as ell as twos wkus
You're right, this is boxing. I don't want any tough guy bs from Mercante, he's just a ref. The only two tough guys in the ring tonight were Cotto and Foreman. Mercante and his tough guy talk is like a fat cop acting hard when he pulls you over, just because he can.
Yes, I've seen in a quite a few times in the UK. Off the top of my head, I remember Mickey Vann doing it, the towel came in and he picked it up and threw it back out without interupting the fight.
