So true. I've got hundreds of old boxing mags in my collection and boxing's decline/demise/death is a surprisingly common topic over the years. At one point back in the 1930s they were predicting the sports demise within a few months! Now we look back at that period like a golden age. Some people are just not happy unless they have something to complain about. They're going to be mighty disapointed when they go to their graves and boxing is still here.
The main problem with boxing is the way it's organized. It ought to be a league with teams, where there are benefits and protections for the athletes and built-in incentives to make good matches.
Same as they did in the 90s. I know this cause I recorded most every boxing program on VHS from 1989 to 98, and all they done back then was cry about how weak the heavyweight division was.
Back in those days fighters fought frequently win or lose. A loss was nothing more, nothing less. Hell a lot of these guys rematched each other 4 or more times. Maybe the biggest difference is that instead of being concerned with how history would remember them, they just fought and enjoyed the ride. They were writting history without the supposed awareness that we have today. Now we have the obsession with atg and p4p rankings. I just want to see good fights and honest fighters. I dont care if Mayweather or Pacquiao are top 5 atgs or top 100. I dont care what my kids kids will think of them.
