Further to my asking Mendoza how Gunboat Smith could score a tko over Jack Johnson in sparring ? Something he consistantly repeats here. I asked him "if Smith scored a tko over Jack, should it be on their records as a tko win for Smith? Also, if that is the case ,should Toxie Hall's knockdown of Marciano be similarly regarded? I've received no answer to my questions, [I didnt expect one]. But, to make amends to other posters ,who may wonder what all the fuss is about, here is a link to CBZ , originally posted by Elmer Ray and revived by Henry Hascup ,[who I am very sorry to say, no longer posts here]. The link gives some background into Rocky's knock down. I first became aware of the KD after reading scribe Peter Wilson's, " More Ringside Seats", in which he has a chapter on Rocky's training camp for Don Cockell,[where the incident occurred].Hope it is of interest. It is post no 11. N. B. the other posts make rewarding reading too.[imo]. http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/cbzforum/showthread.php?8672-Sparring-partners-of-Rocky-Marciano
Cheers for this it's a good find. I heard Rocky had a real hard time being motivated to train for Cockell but what happens in sparring shouldn't be given too much weight anyway, Rocky being dropped once in what over a thousand rounds of sparring? "Toxey, I don't mean any harm," said the champion who had knocked out 38 of his 42 opponents, "but everybody in the ring is my enemy. I don't pull no punches. Anybody who gets in the ring with me, even my friends, I'm knocking them out if I can." Love this quote pretty much sums up the Rocks attitude once he's in the ring.
I totally agree about the importance we should attach to sparring sessions. Fighters try out different things in the gym ,and are seldom "up and motivated "as they would be in real ring combat. No sane person would suggest that Hall would give Rocky real problems in a fight.
Henry appeared to attract a certain amount of cyber bullying maybe he just thinks it is not worth the hassle at his age. :think I for one miss him.
I remember when Lou Saverese KO'd Shannon Briggs in the gym , funny because Briggs was pretty durable in the ring.Another time i was in the 28th st.gym in NY and saw middleweight Tom "the Bomb" Bethea beat the daylights out of 300lb 6"5 Leroy Jones, and they let Jones catch a beating because of his Big Mouth...I actually felt bad for Jones but Bethea was a quiet, low key guy, a gentleman so I understood ...there are plenty of Gym stories that are shockingly true
