Comical blaming Wills for nit forcing a fight with Dempsey, or even Willard for that matter. Willard and Dempsey both very publicly drew the color line. To say he should have fought Miske (who was clearly beaten twice by the same guy Wills knocked out in two rounds) or Brennan, who was ordered to steer clear of Wills by his manager Leo Flynn, or even Gibbons who ducked Norfolk much less Wills for the better part of 7 years. Pretty silly. Short of forcing Dempsey into the ring at gunpoint Wills couldnt gave done much more. He certainly did more than anyone Dempsey CHOSE to fight. The bottom line is that Wills was bigger, better, and far more dangerous than any of Dempseys successful championship fights, everyone knew it, and thats why Dempsey wanted nothing to with Wills.

Dempsey avoided Wills as champion and didn't fight Greb either. I'd favor him to beat both.

I get the impression posters know Dempsey didn't fight either Wills or Greb.

Even Boxrec would pick up on a fight like that!

All this is true. I think it's a shame that everyone here won't admit that Wills was ducked and that his skin color was a large factor in that. For me it's just plain decency. If you love the sport you have to be open about its dark chapters.

I don’t agree with the premise of the article, but I think that it points to something that Dempsey’s more vehement critics won’t acknowledge.

That there was a broader spectrum of opinion regarding Wills, than they are allowing for.

Biased a opinion against a black contender in a, by our standards, extremely racist society? Schocker.

Even this ridicolos piece plainly admits Wills is deserving of a shot. Can't with just have the dignity and leave it that? Can't we show that decency to a man that plainly was mistreated because of the color of his skin?

I'm sorry - and I know that you guys never have shown the slightest hint of racism unlike Burt, Red Cobra, Sangria and Foxy - but this whole debate is just so distasteful to me. The unjust treatment of Wills is really like evolution and global warming (which above mentioned quite possibly don't recognize) - every sane person know it's a fact, but it's still hard to admit for some. Let's just admit this fact about Wills and move on.

It's coming to something when an idiot like you wants to claim the moral high ground. If you really believe the garbage you have written, go and p!ss and moan to your parents and grandparents, they are the ones who lived in a racist Murica, right up until the 60's. And from the marching and protests over there it seems that racism is still alive and thriving, particularly among some police departments.:roll:

I am not disputing that Wills deserved a title shot, or that he was treated shabbily.

I just think that some people try to apply a simple one size fits all explanation, to what was a fairly complex set of circumstances.

And now to your Comical response

Also very publically Dempsey disavowed the colorline. Why not also state that. I will tell you why cos it doesn’t fit your storyline.

Gibbons ko’d Norfolk and Wills was terrible vs Firpo, and really what does Kid Norfolk a LHW have to do with fighting Wills, and you claiming this was something.
FYI Norfolk was a bigger threat to Gibbons then he ever was to Wills cos they were nearer
in weight but of course that wouldn’t fit into your agenda.

Here you are being disingenuous, and you know it cos you have thousands of articles, that tell
you a different story. Since you are again showing you dksab. It takes a promoter to
promote a fight. Don’t come back with “well Dempsey’s best friend Fitzsimmons proposed
the match”or the Shelby fight. Dempsey’s promoter was Rickard. The promoter chooses what fight to promote duh!
He is the one putting up the money, not
Dempsey. Rickard didn’t want to pay what Dempsey wanted for the Wills fight. That also appears in many articles but maybe you choose
to ignore those in favor of your agenda.

When you think how dumb some of your statements and they cant get dumber. Most of your statements are just plain spinning. This article appeared in 1925, after he fought Firpo and Madden in 1924, and in both fights he didn’t look so hot, the consensus by most everybody was that Dempsey would destroy Wills.

Try reading your own posts in Chrome browser on a mobile phone. See if you have any luck deciphering white (or what color is that you chose) letters on white background.
