I think Dempsey could have forced the fight if he wanted. I don't think he'd have ducked the fight had it been made.

I'm not sure how passionate he was about keeping the colour line intact but I don't believe any professional boxer is actually scared of another.

I think Dempsey beats Wills, I've never seen Greb fight so can't comment on that one.

Ultimately though Wills was a deserving challenger and Dempsey faced less deserving challengers in his place. That is a duck.

Never said he didn't deserve the shot neither did the writer, but like the article said he didn't help his cause either, and by 1924-1927 it had almost become a moot point cos he was fading but so was Dempsey. The consensus was that Dempsey would beat Wills. Dempsey didn't fight him that's true but why he didn't fight is not as simple as just saying he "ducked" him.

I am sorry Senya, I guess I still don't know how to post. I tend to write my posts on "word", and then transfer by copy/paste.

Perhaps, you know the old saying "where there is a Willis there is a way".

Two years ago when Dave Shade challenged Mickey Walker for the welterweight championship, Leo Flynn, his manager, was asked why he didn't push his claim. “When the time comes,” be answered. “we’ss attend to that. We’ll get Walker some day but in the meantime we are making much more money and having much less annoyance than Walker.

Sounds kinda like ODH talking about Canelo 100 years later.

Dont forget that Dempsey did fight and KO the man who actually beat Wills - Jack Sharkey.

Although going by boxrec, he also seems to have ducked the man who demolished Wills - Uzcuden

    :huh

On another note if you go on historicfilms.com there is an excellent first generation copy of Dempsey Tunney 2. Or at least highlights thereof.
