Who knows what would have happened if the referee didn't blow it. But the fact is that he was up at 9.

    Ref's discretion how they count.

I'm all for viewing robberies as legitimate losses but a count is too much of a variable.

    Dempsey v tunney
    Tyson v douglas
    Andrade v bute

All a fighter can do is beat the ref's count whether it's 8, 10, or 16 seconds.

It's hard to think of a modern count that takes less than 14 seconds between the fighter's ass hitting the canvas and the fighter being waved in. Some counts do seem to obsess guys though.

I think hernandez v cunningham is another recent example.

Unless the aggressor literally prints to a neutral corner as soon as the punch lands you won't get a 10 second count. Then there's 2 seconds or so when the ref is wiping gloves and checking the faculties of the victim.

As mcgrain says, 14 seconds or so is normal, much longer if you have the kind of posturing we saw with selby v simpson or ali v liston 2 etc.

Artie Levine had breathtaking power by all accounts.

Mc, from what i read in the newspapers, and conversations at Stillman's gym, after Robinson was dropped on his back, the referee did something ODD. He WALKED Artie Levine to a neutral corner, and walked back across the ring to stand over the badly hurt Robinson, and then started the one count. When did U see a ref walk a fighter to a neutral corner. Artie Levine
was not hovering over Robinson...Very ,very suspicious to say the least.
There is a world of difference to a very badly hurt fighter to have an extra 7 or so seconds to shake the cobwebs out of his head...A WORLD of difference indeed...

Only one time comes to mind, burt: When the ref in Montreal stopped his count over an all-but-senseless, spent Bute, saving him from a TKO to wave Andrade to neutral corner.

Agree jg. Bute was given a gift by the referee when the game Andrade had the exhausted Bute out on his feet.
And in the Dempsey/Tunney long count bout in Chicago, 1927, home of the honorable Al Capone ,Dempsey floored Tunney in the seventh rd. But the referee did not start the count until he ordered Dempsey to go to a neutral corner. The ref Barry then started the count of one, 7 or 8 seconds until Dempsey reached the neutral corner...Giving Tunney about 17 seconds to get up and get his bearings...
But in the last rd, Tunney dropped Dempsey with a blow to the temple dropping Jack, and Started the 1 count immediately while Tunney was a foot away from Dempsey, instead of being fair and order Tunney to go to a neutral corner, and then start the count over Dempsey.
So I believe Dempsey, Artie Levine and Andrade , all got the shaft from
each referee...Life is not fair, as JFK reminded us...

In Robinson's book he said after Levine hit him that he remembered nothing from that point on.

I have always felt that Robinson was a little vulnerable to punchers because of his aggressive style.
