So people say this kind of thing about AJ and his hunt for a trainer - maybe motivation is what he needs too? Might have sounded daft hearing "brilliant AJ" while he was losing to Usyk the first time, but the supposed extra technical training for the 2nd fight didn't make that much difference. He'd be as well back with McCracken.

Yarde might well be the same - trainer knows the limits and just uses other tricks to get a performance.

controversial opinion: I’m a little tired of yet another Brave British fighter getting gold stars for “giving a good account of himself” and “losing with his head held high”.

yeah he landed a great shot and hurt Beterbiev momentarily, but he got beat down and lost. this despite being much younger, the home fighter, with promoter and broadcaster backing, favourable ref and scorecards. British fighters often have all the advantages, standards should be higher.

Yarde didn't have the advantage in skill set or experience, went in as a heavy underdog but came to win.

Fought smartly for chunks of the fight, in a fight of the year contender and came again after looking like he was going to be done in the next round after round 4.

It was one of the best efforts from a British underdog in a long time.

He literally gave it his all, can't ask for more then that.

When a fighter is clearly out of his depth and does well then he deserves plaudits imo. What's wrong with that? Had it been somebody like AJ, Josh Taylor, Fury etc then it would be different and looked upon with more scrutiny.

    Don't be miserable

The tweet looked like marketing led rather than a genuine opinion. Eddie Hearn's was similar, 'well done Yarde, now on to building Smith v Beterbiev. It's a way of reaching the boxing punters in the aftermath of the fight.

I think there's some truth in this in general, we do tend to like a plucky loser and overpraise them maybe also, but in this case I genuinely felt Yarde had moved up a level in his own performance and he was up against a genuine world class talent.

Yeah kind of get what you are saying, however I think the plaudits are more for making it a really good fight, as opposed to the one sided beat down we were perhaps expecting. Contrast this with Callum Smith v Canelo - Yarde didn't shell up and went for the win as opposed to just trying to survive!

It was pretty funny how the tale of the tape had Beterbiev at 5ft 11" and Yarde at 6ft, yet when they squared up in the centre of the ring, Beterbiev was a clear 2 or 3 inches taller. No doubt from that midget Tunde claiming to be 5ft 8" so there's no way Yarde is only around the same height.

Agreed. In an era where boxers cherry pick avoid risky fights, we should appreciate and respect fighters that push themselves and take on huge challenges like Yarde did on Saturday.

Got my old man to watch it yesterday.

He gave up with boxing when the multi belt era came in. But he said it reminded him of his days of watching boxing. He'll want to watch Yarde next time he fights.

Fights like this one, Conlan/Woods, Joyce/Parker, if these types of fights were on on a semi regular basis my old man would start watching boxing again.

He text me later on about "The big Fella" Moses Itauma.

Boxing desperately needs these types of contests.

Just catching up on some of the 5Live stuff from before the fight. Buncey’s accent when he’s interviewing Beterbiev
