Yeah, that power and footwork/mobility look good against the bums, but as we saw with Shabranskyy, if there isn't any defensive skill behind it, it doesn't really mean ****.

Same way people were going bananas over JRock. All these guys need to be chin checked.

Williams defense actually isn't bad. I think he over strode, under the spotlight. Seemed like he was trying too hard to stand in, instead of fighting to his own strength sticking and moving. That chin definitely seems suspect though.

His defence is fine, see his amateur fights. He just has no respect for his opponents' power. That could change against Kovalev though ...

Compare J Rock to BeterBeast lol. One is a highly technical dude that has pop for his division. The other has top P4P power, and has demolished everyone he's been in the ring with. I agree BeterBeast needs to tighten up his defense but look at what he's done to everyone he's faced. I think you can count the number of rounds he's lost on one hand.

I saw him when he fought Alexander Johnson and you could hear the punches in the 100 level section. GYM's plan is for him to fight another mid level opponent in Feburary, IBF eliminator in April and hopefully a championship by the end of 2017. He needs to tighten up his D, and not put all his weight on his front foot. But it's hard to argue with a dude who's destroyed everyone he's been in the ring with.

His chin is fine. He had over 300 amateur fights and he fought at the elite level for a long time, at both LHW and HW, against the best amateurs in the world, with a very aggressive seek and destroy style and, according to his detractors, with an abysmal defence but the only evidence anyone can find of him being hurt is him being slightly wobbled in his first tournament at HW and an off balance KD against Jeff Page after being shoved to which he jumped up immediately totally unhurt.

Johnson, like Prieto, Cloud, Maderna, and Rayco Saunders are all tough guys with good chins. Beterbiev is the only one to stop Johnson, Prieto, and Maderna and Cloud had never been off his feet before Artur wrecked him in 2.

Beterbiev fought Rayco Saunders in just his 2nd pro fight, prior to that fight Saunders had only ever been stopped once before in 45 fights and this is despite him having been thrown in with lots of quality guys and big punchers. He suffered his 3rd stoppage loss in 54 fights last month but he's 42 years old now.

Even some of the lesser journeymen Artur fought in his first few fights were pretty tough.

He fought Bill Bailey in his 3rd fight, Bailey has been stopped 3 times in 33 fights, including the first round KO loss to Beterbiev.

In his 4th fight he fought Gabriel Lecrosnier, Lecrosnier has only been stopped 8 times (including Beterbiev fight) in 63 fights.

    Artur's power is devastating

It was devastating in the amateurs. He scored a lot of stoppages and hurt or dropped an awful lot of good fighters during his days in the unpaid ranks too. You don't see too many guys getting dropped like this in the amateurs.

Beterbiev wasn't remotely hurt by that right hand counter Prieto caught him with lol. Prieto is a good fighter and a big puncher too. He hurt Alvarez numerous times during their fight. He wobbled him at the end of the first and had him in big trouble in the sixth round. He hurt him a few other times as well IIRC.

    Some of Beterbiev's amateur scalps

Oleksandr Usyk - Olympic gold medalist, world amateur gold & bronze medalist, European gold & bronze medalist. Usyk beat Beterbiev in the 2011 world amateur championships and the 2012 by 4 pts on each occasion.

Egor Mekhontsev - 2 x World amateur championships gold medalist, Olympic gold medalist, 2 x European gold medalist

    Evgeny Makarenko - 2 x World amateur championships gold medalist, 2 x European gold medalist + 1 x bronze

Abbos Atoev - 2 x World amateur championships gold medalist, Olympic bronze medalist

Vasiliy Levit - 2016 Olympic silver medalist but clearly should've got gold

Yerdos Dzhanabergenov - World amateur championships gold medalist

Oleksandr Gvozdyk - Olympic bronze medalist but should be at least silver as he was robbed in the semi-final

Kenny Egan - Olympic silver medalist, 2 x European bronze medalist

Elshod Rasulov - World amateur championships silver medalist 2 x bronze

Ismail Sillakh - World amateur championships silver medalist, European silver medalist (302-16)

Tervel Pulev - Olympic bronze medalist, 2 x European silver medalist + 1 x bronze

Abdelkader Bouhenia - world amateur championships bronze medalist, European silver medalist

Artak Malumyan - World amateur championships bronze medalist

Nikita Ivanov - European gold medalist

Jose Larduet - World amateur championships bronze medalist

Artur Khachatryan - European bronze medalist

Javid Taghiyev - European bronze medalist

Imre Szello - European bronze medalist

Darren O'Neil - European silver medalist

Sergey Kovalev (very close win on pts)

Yunier Dorticos - WBA CW champion (questionable stoppage though)

    Thabiso Mchunu

Beterbiev stopped quite a few of those guys too.

Beterbiev is world amateur championships gold & silver medalist and a 2 x European gold medalist. He was robbed against the home representative in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. His opponent (Zhang) was allowed to get away with a ridiculous amount of holding and spoiling. Zhang subsequently went on to win the gold, and not without a little more good luck coming his way from the judges. As I said earlier in the thread. Beterbiev had already beaten the guy Zhang fought in the final, Ireland's Kenny Egan who was robbed of the gold against Zhang. Beterbiev stopped Egan in 2 rounds on the OS rule in the European championships in 2006.

Beterbiev had also stopped the guy Zhang fought in the quarter finals (Abdelhafid Benchebla) in the 4th round of the semi-final of the Feliks Stamm Tournament earlier in the same year as those Olympics too and he also beat him again on points the following year as well.

So Beterbiev should really have won gold at Beijing.

Beterbiev was also robbed in the World amateur championships final against Atoev too, IMO.

So Beterbiev lost twice in the Olympics to the eventual gold medalist, and twice in the World amateur championships to the eventual gold medalist. Two of those loses were robberies IMO and the other two against Usyk, one of which some felt he deserved, were close and fiercely contested. Usyk said Beterbiev was probably his toughest opponent he fought in the amateurs.

No surprise that he stopped Dorticos in the amateurs . Cubans all have glass jaws.

Beterbiev is the hardest puncher that amateur boxing saw between 1984-2012.
He is one of the best amateur boxers that never won an olympic medal or gold up there with Espinosa and Selimov, sadly because he arguably won both of his losses at the olympics.
