I thought Kovalev was going to knock him out?

Yes, Beterbiev would destroy Ward. Probably the worst match-up that exists for Ward at the moment.

Light work? No! He has a good chance though, as he is far better on the inside than Kovalev and this is where Ward fought SK. Add his scary power too. On the other hand Ward has the unparalleled ability to spoil his opponents game and to adjust quickly to any situation, in any fight. Pick them fight really and one I would love to see. I have Beterbiev a slight favourite with 55/45.

I haven't picked against Ward since Kessler and thought he'd beat Kovalev by a much more comfortable margin.

As decent as Ward's comp was leading up to that fight (and I do rate Barrera and Brand as respectable wins), there's still a gulf between their level and Kovalev. It's been a long time since Ward's been in with an established elite level fighter and to me we saw him working his way back into that upper echelon through heavy fire.

I had it a draw but I realise I probably favoured Ward in the close rounds, a rematch would see Ward taking a more convincing UD in my opinion. Iron sharpens iron and I feel Kovalev was as sharp as he could be coming in while Ward regained his sharpness the only way he could, during the actual fight.

Mentioning Beterbiev in the same breath as Ward is pretty futile. He already has one foot out of the game and the only fights I could see him entertaining are Kovalev, Stevenson or Golovkin and realistically only the Kovalev rematch would seem to have even a remote chance of happening.

Beterbiev will be avoided by every single champion until the finances tally with the cost of losing a title and getting KO'd in the process. The problem is they wont tally, noone will want to fight this guy, and if someone of note does take the jump, they'll simply serve as a reminder to everyone else why you shouldn't fight him.

It's a shame he's already in his 30s, time isn't on his side in terms of forcing mandatory shots in a sport where the term has lost it's meaning.

For me he beats every single fighter I've mentioned in this post, now. He's that much of a monster.
