This match seems to be more of a hope and prayer for Szpilka after seeing him getting knocked down by the likes of David Saulsberry, going life and death with Mike Mollo, and of course getting ko'ed by Bryant Jennings. This has the stench of a typical Wilder title defense to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQsirnINlTg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=furovEx376Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWdV0G22lxA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjhpoozIcTQ
I was watching a lot of Szpilka fights today in preparation for going to Barclays I forgot what a bomb Jennings hit him with, that left hook folded him I think he can be hit by the right and I think he keeps his hands too low and relies too much on anticipating shots Early on I expect Wilder to be too fluid and fast for him but if the fight gets past 4 or 5 Wilder will be more flat footed and telegraph more Could see Artur drop in a left if Wilder sticks out a lazy jab. Expect a Wilder KO in 4 but if it goes longer and Szpilka is still in decent condition it could get interesting Szpilka reminds me somewhat of a poor mans Ibragimov and just being a southpaw with a hard left hand could spell trouble for Wilder
You forget one thing - Szpilka is only 26, he's still progressing. Yes, he was hot-headed kid back in the day, but this will be the first real test under Ronnie Shields. Wilder at that age was knocked down by Dustin Nichols and Harold Sconiers...
You forgot Wilder got clipped, knocked down and was dazed facing tomato cans. Even Dustin Nichols dropped him with a jab. Both chins are very fragible.
If I was to bet I'd say Beyonce points win tonight. Similar fight to Stiverne, although might be closer.
Exactly. It's another set-up fight - a carefully-selected, very beatable opponent, tailor-made for Wilder to KO. While I certainly would hope that Szpilka would land a solid shot on Wilder's pathetic glass jaw first, I see nothing in his record to suggest this will happen. However, like I said, Fraudley's glass jaw got exposed by Michael Sprott, so it could happen. That's how bad Wilder's chin is. But my sense is that Szpilka's is even worse.
The only thing I'd say in Wilder's defence is that the WBC have ****ed him up a bit. They gave him a belt and how he's yelling that he's a champion. He's not a champion. He's a decent contender. He needs more experience, which is what he's doing now. But step-up fights only become set-up fights when they are "title" fights. As fans, we're insulted by his being a champion rather than his fighting fringe guys, I hope. Because a guy who knows he's not there yet, and his trainers know he isn't there yet, fighting guys that aren't that great are fine. For a champion? Not acceptable.
Szpilka is god awful. I will give Wilder zero credit for the win and fully expect him to win this comfortably within 3 rounds tops.
There's another issue here though. Wilder's been a pro for over 7 years, and he's still facing guys that most fighters are done with in their first year or two as a pro. That's just unacceptable. As is the fact that the "competition" he faced over his first 30 or so fights was unusually pathetic, and represented no real progression of any kind - just carefully selected pins for Wilder to bowl over to build an impressive - and totally bogus - KO record. When managers try to build records like this - and it continues after a fighter moves into contention - there's usually some flaw they're trying to hide. And Wilder's getting decked by two of the tomato cans he's faced - and wobbled by several others - gives a clear idea of what that flaw is.:deal
Iggy had power, speed, SKILLS for days. He had an iron chin and greta defense. He was simply too small and too religious for boxing, as he refused to be #2 below Wlad and simply walked away. Your entire ****ysis up until that point was decent, however, Szpilka is more like an indigent version of Iggy. I make 60K/yr and Im considered working poor with 4 kids. Im more of a poor mans Usyk than Szpilka is a poor mans Iggy.:nono
