In no order I would say Arguello,Chavez, Knight, Frietas, Corrales, Valero, Gatti, Navarratte maybe, and to be honest I can't think of two more?
I liked Grove too, pretty good fighter, him vs Paez is always a fun watch. But by the time of this fight he didnt have much left, started well winning the first few rounds and like mentioned cut Gatti bad on the eye but it was just the younger man s day.I believe Grove never fought after this .He even looked okder than his ID age of 34. From my research yeah Gatti was like you say a charismatic fun guy but he had a darker side when under the influence.I guess you could say he was what Jim Lampley said “a boxing’s everyman”,never thought to be better than anybody just a normal guy who happened to box. I think he was also mentally affected by his dad s untimely death.
I think anyone can see it wasnt just brute force. And thank you. What thoughts do you have not mentioned yet?
I will always think the first Grove vs Paez fight was an absolute robbery as Grove was out boxing him in so many rounds that even getting knocked down 3 times in one round was not enough for him to lose.
Havent watched it in a LONG time but remember it was a great controversial fight. On a side note it bugs me the whole boxing establishment has somehow decided his son should box. His dad would never approve.
Classic Philly fighter. Gatti friend turned opponent turned friend again Ivan Robinson had some of that aswell.
I will address some more controversial events tomorrow such as the botched weigh in with Gamache and what happened afterwards. Some interesting stuff there.
Yes. I saw Ivan fight De La Hoya in the amateur ranks. He lost but it was a good fight and he did well.
I thought his Gatti’s first fight with Robinson was his most exciting fight. Gatti-Ward 1 had the best individual round (9th), but overall I liked the first Robinson fight a little bit more. I also scored both fights a draw BTW.
So,lets get back into it.The Gatti-Gamache weight controversy. Well first lets have a look at Gatti's fight night weights as HBO recorded them thru a few fights: Patterson 2-145 Ruelas-146 Manfredy-146 Robinson 1-152 Robinson 2-150 Munoz-160 Gamache-160 So,offcourse counting for his weight class increase(his weights here are from 130 to 140) he added about 15 lbs. During that period of time as establoished earlier Gatti was bang in the middle of his crazy party days, had been training out in Virginia Beach with Pernell Whitaker, probbaly doing some of the best columbiana they could get as that s when Pernell failed his drugtest than cancelled the Quartey fight. More on this this is the time period he got Kell Brook''d in the sense that he and his then gf went to another couples place in Miami to hang out.At some point according to Pat Lynch Arturo left to "get more drinks and maybe other substances" and when he came back the guy told him his gf had left.Gatti didnt buy it and from then a fight broke out in which he was stabbed and arrested for.I guess the couple wanted to double team his gf without him. Anyway this is just to illustrate where he was then. He wasnt taking it seriously. Lamps mentions in the first Robinson fight he walks around over 160. So they made this Gamache fight at 141. Many people say that this weigh-in was rigged.Thru my rigorous research I would have to say there was something fishy there.Maybe not mainly for Gatti but he benefitted from it. During the broadcast of which I have in full of HBO's WCB Gatti/Gamache de la Hoya/Coley doubleheader I believe they show footage of the weigh-in. Gatti steps on the scales, the needle is still moving when a NYSAC guy yells "141".Afterwards Gatti immediately drinks water so that is done. Gamache s team did protest it espeecially his manager Johnny Boz but to no avail.Apparently they were told to "STFU and stop making a big deal". It does appear Gatti DID NOT evidently and without any doubt make the 141 weight there. He could have been on weight but we will never know. What I found out is that Coley's people made the same remarks about Oscar's weigh in for the main event claiming that DLH didnt make weight either but were quickly shut down. Also,in one article I found Johnny Boz,Gamache s manager, had Joey weigh in at the hotel the morning of the weigh in.140.Easy work. They arrived at the weigh -in and Boz had Joey weigh-in again just ot be sure and much to his surprise the scale said 137 and a half.He reported it and it was recalibrated. All this make me think the whole thing was rigged for possibly only de la Hoya and Gatti benefitted from it aswell or possibly for both. But it did seem rigged. Also afterwards Gamache went Billy Collins Sr on them and sued EVERYBODY recounts Pat Lynch. He sued Lynch,Gatti,Main Events and the NYSAC. All of the lawsuits were dropped without evidence except the NYSAC one. That one dragged on for years and years and years. In fact,at the time of his death, the morning he was found Gatti was suppose to fly from Brazil to his sister's wedding. Afterwards, the day after he was scheduled to appear in a NYC court to testify in a new day in the Gamache vs NYSAC case.Gatti was just a witness at this point. Evidently he didnt make either date. Furthermore, consolidating my view it was rigged, the NYSAC accepted a payment to halt the whole process with Gamache and they settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money. Make of this what you will.To me it s clear those weigh-ins were rigged. It wasnt Gatti's fault,he was just the performer that benefitted from it.
And he was paid only 50 k for it aswell or something liek that.He did get 400 k in the rematch. I liked the dynamic more of Gatti-Ward but Gatti-Robinson were entertaining aswell especially the first one. Myself,I cant see how Robinson didnt win the first one,I thought he pulled it out clearly. I have never scored Gatti-Ward I as the judges did ,for Ward.At most I can see a draw but I think Gatti pulled out a close one. Regardless scorecards dont matter much there it was just hard fighting.
Maybe even less,40 k something like that. He was brought in as an opponent,no one thought he would win.It was the Upset of the year 1998. His purse reflected that. Goes to show,in boxing, your only 1 win away from making life changing money.
