People like to remember gatti by the twilight of his career when he was a bloated alcoholic 30 year old looking for a pay day, a human punching bag. But if you actually watch prime gatti fights you will see he was a slick boxer. He had a very strong amateur pedigree with solid fundamentals and great footwork and hand speed. Somewhere down his career he got lazy and realized he could out slug most guys if they went toe to toe with him. Watch his early fights and you'll see what I am talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbpH0zrFzuM
Defense? Pfffffft.... when he'd get hurt he'd simply stand directly infront of his opponents with his arms crossed around his face and then proceeded to get decked in the face repeatedly. Probably the absolute worst form of defense I've ever seen from a wounded fighter.
Gatti has average skills but tremendous power along with a big heart. He knew from within that if he can't outbox someone he'd rather stand and deliver. And sadly, most of the time he can't.
Quoted for truth. I can't believe I actually read an article in last month's Ring magazine which defended the choice of voting him into the Hall. Dreadful decision. :-(
Spadafra is lucky he avoided Gatti and hung out draining himself instead. Gatti is hall of fame no doubt. really? How dense are you? There are 3 criteria: resume great fights put in impact on the landscape Anything else, get to ****.
Underrated defense and Gatti don't belong in the same sentence .Unless you call blocking punches with your face defense ..
His fights with Tracy Harris Patterson to win and defend the title are talking were probably the best displays of the defense and boxing skills from Gatti's early career you are talking about. From the late 90's to the early 2000's he was much more of the blood and guts warrior that made him famous. Against Rodriguez, Robinson x2, Ruela's, Manfredy, De La Hoya, Ward I he basically used his face to block punches in brutal matches (though in several he came back to win to be fair). It looked like his career might be over after he got hammered by De La Hoya. But after his first fight with Ward, he seemed to start to rely on his often underused boxing skills, and had a far easier time with Irish Micky in the final two bouts. That was the beginning of the mini resurgence Gatti's career in his early 30's, thanks mostly to refining his boxing skills. He won a title and kept the run right until he fought Money May. He probably fought too much of a boxers fight against Floyd truth be told, not that it would have made any difference though.
