Yes it does. Wepner was no ATG, and even at the age of 50, Liston was still better than he was.

From what I've read Sonny hadn't trained seriously for quite a while

I know but look at the current heavyweight champion that does not fight, just blows a lot of empty promises. Let's see if he shows up to his proposed fight on July 24th 2021 fight. We are on Classic Forum, too many other threads in the past of a short timer, threads on a certain champion in the late 1980's.

Williams's best result is a draw with Machen ffs. He was a level below Floyd.

Yeah, you're big on such excuses. Also why you think Mike gos his ass spanked by Douglas. I personally feel that Ali showed that his speed was too great for Liston to overcome. Liston would have to catch him and put him down to win and the odds of doing so wouldn't be great. Could happen if Ali was reckless, but in most cases not.

But that is at least a more sensible discussion to have than that Liston was shot, which is just silly. But we won't agree, so I'll leave it at that.

Resume wise, or even in terms of overall ability he might be, but if they fought, I'd favor Williams (prime vs prime of course)

    Same reason, Mike wasn't prepared.

I agree, Ali's speed was the difference. But if I am right and Liston was indeed that old, don't you think a younger version, who's also properly prepared, would have more chances against Ali ?!
Personally, I see Ali winning on points prime vs prime, but Liston can still win if Ali makes a mistake.

I never said Liston was shot, I said he was past his best and not properly prepared.

It's a cycle that always happens. Next will be Vitali and Valuev threads before going back to Maricano.

Foreman’s media savvy big time, he’d never say anything negative

All very good points. There was definitely a version of Liston imo that had a serious chance of beating the best Ali, if you look in his fights a few years prior he had more speed Liston and although he would be at a speed disadvantage always, prime Liston with his reach an jab an all round ability would be a massive hurdle to overcome for Ali. He was to old and slow by the time they met

Ali beat a very low boxing IQ foreman in Zaire. The dumbest fight at that level I think I’ve ever seen from foreman

Wepner was a solid boxer who was in his prime (age 30) when he fought a 42? 45 year old Sonny Liston who destroyed him so badly that Wepner needed 72 stitches and said that Liston was a harder puncher than Foreman and Ali. Wepner was ranked in the top 10 HW by Ring Magazine.

This is the same Wepner who was the inspiration for Rocky Balboa after he went 15 rounds vs the champion Muhammad Ali. The same Wepner who was one of 4 fighters ever to knock down Ali.

Liston beat him in his last match in 9 rounds as a breaking down old fighter.

I certainly don't believe anything Arum says, and less so Ali's corner.

To be sure, Liston was no coward. One doesn't attain what he did with cowardice. Just does not make sense.
