Arum said middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham is also in the picture, but not until the fight after the fall defense. "I think Kelly could fight Abraham at beginning of [2009]," Arum said. "Kelly would like to make that a statement fight as he leaves the middleweight division." He had hoped Pavlik could fight in September and again in December, but the potential Abraham bout, he said, would be put off until early 2009 because of a lack of TV dates. Arum said HBO is interested in Pavlik-Abraham for Jan. 31.

    I'm sure we'll see Calzaghe-Pavlik.

It is stupid for fighters, but not promoters. That is their job. Look into the crystal ball and sell, sell sell! ;) I think this is his way of saying Pavlik/Calzaghe is in the works. It is a bone to keep Cal from announcing retirement. This could get good. ;)

So a fight with Sturm is just about impossible to make?

So if Pavlik plans two more fights after Lockett this year...... One probably has to be a mandatory defense. But the other.... It looks like Calzaghe-Pavlik could just about be a done deal.

I have no personal knowledge of Sturm other than what I read. Supposedly he has turned down lucrative offers from Abraham. No intent of risking his title unless forced by the WBA.

Lockett is a mandatory. If Abraham disposes of Lorenzo, who seems intent on forcing a defense of that title, the WBC may drop him from number 2 and that would make Duddy Pavlik's other mandatory. Then the stage is clear for Pavlik/Abraham. Major props for Abraham. Posters here had me convinced he would nurse his title the same way Sturm is doing because of his more recent fights. I never though he would even think about getting back in the ring with Miranda, let alone Pavlik. OUTSTANDING!:happy

If Calzaghe and Pavlik are still sporting goose eggs at the end of their records after that, then we have "The Fight". Ring magazines number 5 and 9 p4p picks going after each other.

Good question. Joe has said he will only come back to 168 for Pavlik, but at that point, his belts may be gone. It would be over a year since he defended them. But, the alphabets may go along as long as he schedules Pavlik. Or maybe just pick up a tune up fight to defend and keep them as an enticement to Pavlik.

If Pavlik intends to have his calender filled until January '09 - then I don't see a match between Pavlik-Calzaghe. Because at that time, Calzaghe will be too comfortable at light heavyweight, or deciding to hanging up his gloves.

Then there is the matter, will Pavlik even beat Abraham?... Pavlik ought to get a Calzaghe fight sealed right after the Hopkins/Lockett bouts.

Three fights to go in 2007 if he follows his 4 fights a year plan. Next up his Lockett. ( Pavlik taking a mandatory early to free up his schedule ) Another fight this year also has to go to a mandatory. ( Pavlik has 2 belts ) But who is the third fight? They have to have someone in mind because they already know it isn't Arthur. Sturm has shown no interest in risking his belt. John Duddy seems to have fallen out of favor since his ugly win. If it's Winky I'll eat my hat. Everyone else at middleweight isn't a big name enough to plan that far ahead for. And they've shown no interest in facing anyone at auper-middleweight except..... Joe Calzaghe.

Of course if Calzaghe loses to Hopkins or Pavlik loses to Lockett it could mess up these plans, but I wouldn't be surprised if there where informal, unofficial plans in both camps for this fight to occur after Hopkins and Lockett.

Pavlik vs Calzaghe would be a fight fans dream. Two contrasting but equally attack minded styles, I would pick Calzaghe to win right now but in a few years I think he would be too old and Pavlik would be somewhere near his physical peak by then.

Agreed. But if they do have an under the table agreement to fight each other after Pavlik-Lockett they won't annouce it until after Pavlik beats Lockett. It'd just be rude to dis Lockett that way.
