On what it will take for Cotto to even think about beating Margarito if the two meet for a second time, Arum said that Cotto’s conditioning and strength, as well as an overall line of attack, would have to improve. “Not having a real strategy, just going back against the ropes where he got hurt,” Arum counted as his blunders. “There are a lot of things that need to be corrected.” Will Cotto be the same fighter after such a punishing and debilitating loss? “You never know,” Arum said. “I sort of think that he will be, but you never know. Sometimes a defeat like that ruins a fighter.”

Bobfather might have a point but we have to wait until Cotto comes back so we can all determine this.

Arum almost seems to be implying that his relationship with Team Cotto is now strained, and he wants the marketplace (other promoters) to know that Cotto might be damaged goods *so stay away from him, wink*

You may be on to something. Team Cotto probably didn't want this fight . However, Arum basically backed them ino a corner; forced it upon them. That would certainly strain the relationship.

Definately ^, Team Cotto would have to have their heads buried in sand not to see or sense that Arum orchestrated this vast increase in his Mexican American PPV and Mexican national terrestrial network TV interests by putting Margarito in position to get that win. It's hardly a coincidence that Top Rank pushed for this and forced Cotto's hand, agreed.

He just said "Sometimes a loss like that ruins a fighter" he didn't say "Cotto is ruined"

Cotto needs to be brought back into the game smartly.

He's right...sometimes a defeat like that ruins a fighter (Fernando Vargas for instance).

I don't think he's saying anything too out there...and I'm sure once Cotto bounces back, Arum will be back all over that train.

I think they credited the close calls he had with Chop Chop Corley and Ricardo Torres to being weak from making 140, so no he probably can't go back down. He doesn't really need to, it wasn't being too small that lost him the fight to Margarito it was Margarito being better that night. He should bide his time, re-build, wait for Margarito to start fading either from age, punishment in the ring, or getting used to the good life and it taking away that hardness he possesses. Then get in there for a re-match in a couple of years.
