    Pacman and Clotty in NYC

Jerry Glick reporting: Top Rank held a press conference at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Wednesday for the upcoming WBO World Welterweight Title fight between Champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and his Challenger Joshua “Grand Master” Clotty. Clotty is not new to the Garden and not unfamiliar with championship hype. Last time we saw him he lost a close one to then defending champion Miguel Cotto. Cotto went on to lose to Pacquiao and Clotty sat around since that June night waiting for just this kind of opportunity. They will meet on March 13, 2010 at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington TX.

Bob Arum, head man at Top Rank, made it clear that this is no substitute fight for Pacquiao-Mayweather, it is a fight that, he believes, will stand on its own as an exciting match between two men who don’t run but come to fight.

The venerable promoter fielded questions about the “other” topic of the day, the blood testing issue that came up between Pacquiao and Mayweather that led to the match being scrubbed.

“If you want changes,” said Arum about the Mayweather camp asking for periodic blood testing on Pacquiao, “You have to ask the commission to change the rules. That’s the democratic way. You cannot have fighters in this sport imposing regulatory restrictions on other fighters because they damn well please. The sport then goes into chaos.”

The stipulations for fights are a creature of contract. Always have, always will. The commissions only set basic guidelines.

Memo to Bob Arum: There is nothing in the rules of the commissions that stipulate that it is against the rules to "request" for additional PED testing. It is considered an allowable request just like $10 million per pound weight penalties, catch-weights, etc.

If Bob is going to use the commission rulebook as the guide, then he should realize that there is no rule against what Mayweather's team requested. Just like there was no rule against requesting a $10 million per pound weight penalty. The commissions already have standard penalties in place for weight violations, do they not?

    Bob is being a hypocrite.

A 154 lb fighter going down a weight class to meet another fighter would be a catchweight.

Its the same thing as Pavlik and Hopkins meeting at 170.

welter weight is 147 basic but boxers can request weight lower than basic weight from 141 to 146 theres's nothing wrong with it as long boxers agree to it

If you were responding to me: Commissions have specific penalties for coming in over-weight. Why is it ok for Bob Arum and Team Pacquiao to make up their own penalties when the commissions already have penalties in place and NOT ok for Team Mayweather to request their own PED testing when the commissions have PED testing in place? It is the same thing in principle.

You can't say, "this request is ok because the commission allows it," then turn around and say: "this request isn't allowed even though the commission allows it."

They are both "requests" and neither request is against the rules of the commissions.

Both teams requested something beyond the "normal rules of the commissions." The only difference between the requests of the two management teams, in principle, is this: only one side accepted the other team's terms while the other team walked away from the negotiating table.

well as i say commission have rules and guideline to follow if you are over basic weight then the commission will penalize you but if you are in contract weight then thats the job of the promoter

:good Similiar to what I posted in another thread...

If you have to follow the rules then why is there any negotiating at all? Why not just follow the rules? The truth is you write a contract to appease both parties... A rehydration clause is not a commission "rule" so why did Manny want one for DLH?

Why didnt he want to "Follow the rules" in that particular case? He decided to make up a rule that he wanted to follow and his opponent agreed... So you can't really pick in choose when to "follow the rules" only when you feel it's in your best interest...

There is nothing wrong with doing that...but you can't fall back on principle only when it benifits you. Thats hypocritical...

    Make sense?
