... do any of you spar with others from a kickboxing background, or muay thai background, or other martial art background? I mean, out of curiosity as to how they approach the fight, or perhaps for a mutual exchange of ideas and/or training tips, or to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each of your backgrounds in circumstances in and out of the ring? Or do you train in boxing against other boxers only, for the ring, purely for the sport of boxing only?
I was just asking if any of you do that, and if so, what did you get out of it, did you feel the need to adapt and cross-train in something else or did you focus more on your boxing to develop it further (ie. have you ever felt that boxing was lacking in certain aspects). I have a tremendous respect for boxing and its ability to handle various circumstances. Some of the toughest/resilient guys I know are boxers. Boxing itself may not have any kicking or other features other than the basic jabs, straights, hooks and uppercuts, but it makes up for it with lightning fast combinations and fast footwork.
Training boxing is the best thing to do for boxing. If you're gonna be boxing, then just stick with the boxing. If you're gonna be doing kickboxing, learn kickboxing. If you're gonna be doing all-in fighting (mma), then learn mma. not sure what you're looking for.
i just train with boxers but afew guys have karate backgrounds which make them slightly awkwad to deal with
I strickly just box and have so for five years now. At my gym though there is a few guys on the mma team that spar with me and another guy from the boxing team to work on there standup game. Its a little different due to them standing more square and throwing the occassional hammer punch, but its beneficial for them. Our gyms mma team just had a tournament and six out of the ten guys that went, won medals. Only three of the ten spar with us boxers to work on there standup game, all three of them were in that six with medals.
I spar with a kickboxer and he always holds and lifts his leg ready to knee you in the balls. Cheeky **** still used to kickboxing. But he never punches runs in and holds you. Funny.
sometimes we have karate guys come into our gym. doesnt really help any of us but its just kind of fun messing around with them.
Sparred with several mma fighters and muay thai fighters that come to our gym to improve their boxing. They're usually very wild and just throw power shots, don't use the jab very well. But that's guys that are muay thai fighters or mma fighters and are just trying to improve their boxing, not guys who come from a different background and are now trying to become boxers and just have a different style.
