As well all know, The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, helped to pioneer the art of the clinch. Many people these days seem to be adamantly opposed to any boxer who clinches. That being said, The Greatest did just that a LOT. Well known for his clinching, Ali would clinch opponents who were typically smaller than himself. Would Ali have been even GREATER had he never used the clinching tactic?

    What do you think, ESB?

What really bothers me about him was how he always pressed down on the necks of opponents in clinches, which he did get in a lot of.

This is boxing not hitting whatever it takes to win and you can get away with is okay to me, sure I love Rios-Alvarado rock em sock em style but if that's all I wanted I'd be a UFC fan.

It has always been kind of a double standard kinda deal.

People whining about boxer a doing it calling it spoiling, and celebrate when boxer b does it calling it crafty.
I myself have always been a bit of a Ali detractor, not by questioning his talent, but his actual excitement level and a couple of his "wins" that were pretty debatable.
He got away with too much in some of his fights, and it seems to be not done to call upon that when his career is discussed.

    I see it like this.
If a boxer frequently holds (not too much of course), but still clearly outboxes his opponent and frequently presses the action himself for the rest of the fight I'm totally fine with it.

Difference being Wlad has huge size and power advantages whereas Ali wasnt particularly threatening in terms of size or power

Pretty much all but not all. What is the trick of Vitali, for example?

Clinching is legal so as long as it's not very excessive, I'm ok with it. In Ali's case it was holding behind the head and puling it down which is an intentional, illegal move known for draining your opponent of energy. I really doubt he would win the Foreman fight if not for this.

And Ali wouldn't have been in there with Foreman if they didn't rob Norton either.
Many great battles wouldn't have happened, and boxing history would have been quite different if boxing was completely fair. :yep

That's just your opinion; Ali was huge for his era, and he used to ouheight/outreach/outweight the major part of his opponents; foreman was called a giant, but he was just a couple of inches taller than ali

More like 1cm = less than half on an inch taller than Ali.

Wlad bear hugs and doesn't let go till the ref breaks and moves his opponents to a safe distance.
Ali boxed out of the clinch. Theres a big difference.
