Atg, he is the king of the ring schools anybody that's steps in with him. Why? Because boxing is his art and craft he's the general!
uh, top 30 I suppose, definitely top 50. One of the greatest Middleweights to ever live, and has been turning back the hands on the clock for years. I mean look at the fight with Trinidad, that was nearly 10 years ago and he was considered old then.
Top 45. Dominant Middleweight and the manner in which he amounted his best wins hold him in very high regard. He didn't just beat Trinidad, Tarver, and Pavlik, he outboxed them all convincingly. The idea that Hopkins beat on small men is revisionist history. Not has it only been common through history for the Middleweight champion to take on the best Welterweights of their day, but all three of the previous mentioned opponents were favoured. The man's longevity is simply staggering, and at his best, no Middleweight has an easy time with him. The second greatest of the last era, in my opinion.
Something overlooked when people slander Hopkins record I feel. Monzon and Hagler are considered to be the top middleweights of all time (among others) yet their most famous wins come over Napoles/Griffith and Duran/Hearns/Mugabi respectively. All of whom where the smaller men. Personally...I don't have a top 100 yet but I think hes clearly towards the top end of the best in his era, only behind Whitaker, Pacquiao, Jones and maybe Chavez.
Top 30 for sure. The amount of time he's been able to box at such a high level is amazing. Think if other boxers had the will and training determination that Hopkins had throughout his career
hopkins is top 10 at 160. smart fighter, great ring generalship, sneaky. keeps opponents off balance( drives shoulder into opponents) one trick. hopkins is def a master of the game, but his style can be hard to appreciate for causal fans. the knock on hopkins will be that he was beaten easily in his prime by a prime RJJ. one sided fight. RJJ was better at 160.
Top10 atg middleweight. Difficult to say where he'll end up as he is still active, possibly anywhere from 25-50 depending on how his last few fights go. Bernard is an inspiration & a legend to some & a racist villain to others. He's had an amazing life & career & he's not finished yet.
Hard to rate. Never fought anyone his own size, tended to lose when he did (Calzaghe, Taylor). Making up for it now at LHW fighting Pascal, but you can't help but notice that through his career he's always taken the easy route. A big part of being an ATG, for me anyway, is a willingness to fight anyone and to fight bigger men. Hopkins pretty much is the opposite of what you want out of a fighter in that regard, but his skills and longevity are amazing and deserve credit.
1st of all lets dispell the myth about the supposed greatness of hopkins resume, take away the smoke and the mirrors and this is what your left with from hopkins 6 best wins, with 4 of them being from when he made his opponent fight way above what their best weight was :deal trinidad prime weight = welterweight (147) fought hopkins at middleweight (159) trinidads record at middleweight or above from hopkins onwards = 2 wins / 3 defeats winky wright prime weight - light middleweight (154) fought hopkins at - 170 lbs in 57 fights, the hopkins fight was the only fight that wright had weighed over 160 lbs (a full 10lbs difference) de la hoya prime weight - welterweight (140lbs) fought hopkins at - middleweight (160lbs) :rofl de la hoya only fought twice in his career at middleweight out of 45 fights -1 win / 1 loss - the win was a very debatable decision over eurobum felix sturm pavlik prime weight - middleweight (160 lbs) fought hopkins at - 170 lbs in 34 fights pavlik had only fought 2 minnions at the beginning of his career at 169. all pavliks fights since hopkins have been at the 160 limit. tarver prime weight 175 great 2 weight jump from hopkins and his best win despite tarver being a b-level fighter and going 3 wins / 3 losses from hopkins onwards. johnson prime weight -super mid / light heavy (162 to 175) fought hopkins at - middleweight (160) johnsons record at 160 + from hopkins onwards - 19 wins / 14 defeats / 2 draws the defeats have come against people of the level of ottke, woods, shieka, gonzales, harmon, branco, vanderpool, Kiwanuka, sosa :rofl now take into account that hopkins lost to the only good fighters he ever fought at a fair weight in jones, taylor and calzaghe. even mercado got a draw with hopkins :rofl you gullable ****ers need to stop falling for the smoke and mirrors, you need to stop reading your brain-washing ring magazine and quit listenning to the bias dog**** spouted on hbo. hopkins beat welterweights like de la hoya and trinidad and then started calling out shane mosely atsch - that tells you everything you need to know about bernard, after all, this is a man who spent his so called prime years beating welterweights, fighting robert allan 3 times and duckin prime calzaghe to fight the legendary hakar for a quarter of the money :dead
It's hard to believe...but I must agree with most of what HeadBanger previously mentioned. I've said the same in the past... Nevertheless, Hopkins should be very well regarded for the remarquable length of his career while competing at such a high level throughout + his accumulated accomplishments over that long period of time. He most likely deserves top 60 ATG.
