Anderson Silva is an extremely special MMA fighter and if he wants to challenge himself, I am more than okay with that.

 

it's a really lame idea, IMO but if anderson wants to do it, then he should. but it will be selfish of him if he does.

Even todays RJJ would humiliate Silva in a boxing match. The term embarressment was made just for such possibilities has Silva and RJJ fighting.

Is Jones a favorite? Yes. Is Jones a HUGE favorite? Yes. Would I ever bet a single dollar on Silva versus Jones in a boxing match? Probably not (depending on the odds, I might bet a few dollars.)

Let's be real though. Jones is not half of what he used to be and Silva is probably the best he's ever been.

If Silva thinks he can beat him I think he should get a shot.

Silva makes about $300-400,000 per match in UFC.
In a fight against Roy Jones he makes a minimum of $5 million.

I mostly agree. I don't find your analysis wrong, and if I had to bet money on it, I think RJJ is very very clearly the very large favorite.

Either way, what is Roy's next career move anyways? I don't think the trinidad fight is going to put him in line for another title shot just yet, and if this is an easy fight that will earn him a lot of money I think he should take it.

Also, Anderson Silva can knock people out with punches. There should be no doubt that Anderson Silva is one of the best boxers in MMA at the very least. This fight gets to shed a little light to those who think that good MMA boxers can beat good single discipline boxers, and that is a plus (we have already seen a few times what happens when boxers try the transition to MMA, but we rarely see, and never at this high level of competition, what happens when an MMA fighter boxes.)

Anderson can punch and he has no one to fight in his weightclass. Roy Jones needs to fight SOMEBODY and he probably doesn't yet deserve a title shot. This fight would be a spectacle that Anderson Silva fans and MMA haters would love to see, and SILVA can punch, so he does at the very least have a punchers chance.

Also, your analogy isn't 100% correct. Silva comes from a Muy Thai background and Muy Thai is much more similar to boxing than Judo is. I'm not saying that this wouldn't be a bit of a freakshow fight, but freakshow fights, here and there, aren't necessarily bad for either sport. Besides the more noble goal of competition, the primary objective of both MMA and boxing is to entertain, and I would be more than willing to watch this bout.

 

I think the distinction between what is good for the sport, and what is good for someones wallet has been drawn..

Roy beating Silva is good for the sport of Boxing, as it will stroke the ego's of many boxing purists. At the same time, if Silva makes a good account of himself, and boxing purists are honest, he will get some respect..

There is also the aspect of Silva honestly believing that much in himself. I don't think Silva is going to not train and show up to be Roy's punching bag.. Silva will be in there trying to take Roy out. I think Roy will knock him out within 3 rounds, but Silva should have the right to do what he wants as a fighter.

Also.. Lets remember.. Dana White talked all his **** about boxing and instigated this rediculous rivalry between these two great sports. He might believe his own hype, and be allowing Silva to do this for promotional reasons.. I think knocking Dana white down a few pegs won't be such a bad thing. He needs to be put in his place.

 

Dana didn't instigate it, there has been fights between wrestlers and boxers forever.

 

You are right.. There always has been beef between different forms of combat in general. Boxing and Wrestling has been one of the Americas for a long time. But, Dana stepped it up and started using the platform of MMA announcing via Joe Roegan, and himself to weigh in on how much better MMA is than boxing. This caused a **** storm in boxing, and on these forums.

Instead of causing some sort of posative reaction, it just repulsed a lot of would be MMA fans away from the sport.. It's ok to like both, but Dana did himself and the sport no favors with people who are more along the lines of Purists who may have been interested in MMA.. Those people were likely repulsed by Dana White and Joe Roegan.
