Mayweather here is very smart and i think most fighters coming up should adopt his not caring attitude he always puts himself before the fans as fighters should health should always come firs. If he feels he can get UD without putting himself at risk he will do it. Now on to the main topic Why do some fighters always feel the need to always go for a knockout when they have the choice of winning a UD what really makes them think this way? Some boxers care about fans to extent that they would risk everything. How would you honestly view a fighter who you was a fan of because of his aggressive style and always wanting a knockout if he was to box or be evasive against a fighter would you give him more flack then a fighter who is a naturally a boxer? I feel that as fans we are far more hard on Fighters who want to get knockouts every fight to the point that if that aggressive boxer wants to elect to box for just one fight the fans would **** on him.
I think yo meant "defensive minded", but point taken. My favorite fighters are all defensive minded fighters, just get the win and don't completely stink out the joint ala' Cory Spinks.
there's one main issue here. Many fighters don't have the luxery to go safe, because they won't be sure they'll get the nod if they don't knock their opponent out. If you're born in the "wrong" country, you have to make sure your opponent hits the canvas and stays there, because there's a good chance you gonna get robbed blind if you don't succeed. Just take a look at Matthysse's record, or the ones that don't have heavy hands like Herrera and Campillo... edit: and now I see you actually mean defensive minded fighters instead of offensive.
I agree, the paradigm shift in public opinion of specifically American fans happened when Floyd Mayweather Jr. rose to prominence, this country used to love and greatly value offensive seek and destroy type fighters like Foreman and Tyson and put them on a pedestal, and the only ones who valued defensive fighters were the purists, now that Floyd is the face of the sport there's a whole lot of fans that in some cases don't even fully understand why he wins jumping on his bandwagon and all the fighters who fight like him with varying motives behind their obsessive need to defend his less than entertaining style. And from that need to defend Floyd bashing of what everyone used to consider the most entertaining fighting style has become a tool to attempt decry Floyd detractors with the barbarian casual fan stamp.
