As good as Loma's career has been, I feel like he wasted some potential

He could have been seen as historically a top 10 guy ever, his skill is that of a top 10-15 boxer of all time.

He stayed amateur too long, lost to Salido in his 2nd pro fight who he allowed to come in overweight and was allowed to foul him by shambolic refereeing (thats 1 loss that never should have happened).

Moved to 135 lbs when severely undersized and lost to Teofimo Lopez (clear loss, but he probably should never have moved up.

Got robbed vs Devin Haney even when severely undersized.

I really hope Loma gets at least one more big win vs someone like Tank or Shakur and fulfills some of his immense talent. He really should have turned pro earlier and been a guy with a 35-1 record or something.

    This is what you want.

What Lomachenko wanted was to win four gold medals for his country and set an unbelievable amateur record of 396 wins with only one loss.

Lomachenko moved up because he wanted tougher challenges. Loma wasn't afraid to lose. You say he never should have moved up, he is a fighter, a warrior.

What you wanted was a businessman who boxed.

You speak of wasted potential because the internet won't remember him as a "top ten guy" ever. People he has never met, shared a meal or even had a conversation with. Yet, the Ukrainian people, who are his family and country will remember him forever.

I believe you are confusing "potential" with professional and financial success. Some people aren't driven by money or what others think of them in terms of what makes an all time great.

Fighters like him are necessary to bridge the amateur-pro gap for the eastern euros/asians. If Loma hadn't done what he did, we wouldn't have Usyk.

Think about this: as recently as Kovalev and Golovkin, there was no market for a super talented power punching non-HW. Those guys couldn't get powerful promoters until they racked up insane records with almost all KO's.

Before Loma, there was no market for an eastern euro non power puncher who was below 160. Now fighters like Madrimov are given credit and promotion they never would've received.

You can say he could have achieved more as a pro, and he probably could have, but he still did a lot.

I think as a professional he won’t be viewed historically as good as he really is..

It’s tragic because it’s basically because he smoked the divisions he’s sized for and sought out tougher challenges by moving into a higher weight that also had a stronger talent pool at the time….

…but many fans seem to just go by the records, unfortunately, and his record doesn’t look as great as many of us believe he is, as a pro.

But if he stayed at one of the lower weight classes and dominated, he’d probably be viewed better historically but still with a big asterisk next to his name (ala Wladimir Klitschko).. I think it’s refreshing that he has opted to continually sought challenges in his career, rather than focusing on holding a title, regardless of what the record looks like.

    Time will tell though!

His pro career is fine. Lots of amateur standouts transition too late.

Covid and the war in Ukraine caused him two fights in his best years.

Without the war he takes the Kambosos fight and becomes unified at 135.

Before Loma I thought only non-white fighters could be THAT slick.

In my opinion he should have stayed at the lighter weights and ruled with an iron fist. Instead he moved up and faced guys that were much bigger than him which nullified a lot of his skills simply by being huge. The worst part is that he won't even get credit for what he did.

Lomachenko is a massive over achiever, nobody cares about Ukrainians, nobody cares about jr featherweights and yet he has accomplished all of this. You have to give credit where credit is due.

If he had stayed at 130... Maybe Stenson would have beaten him, in which case hw wouldn't have been in a better situation than today ranking wise. He would have made less money, though.

Probably only by a minority. Ruling 130 would only get him so far in the rankings, and if he lost to Shakur he wouldn't even be seen as invincible in perhaps his best weight class.
