As good as Loma's career has been, I feel like he wasted some potential

Loma is close to even money against Shakur now and at a weight he's very clearly not ideally suited for.

While I certainly rate Stevenson, unlike many on here, he doesn't beat a prime Loma at 130lbs.

If they ever meet we'll get a clearer view on this.

He has had the fight required to secure his legacy, he just isn't won them all

    Perhaps.

I would hasten to add, however, that the fight will not be contested at 130lbs or in Lomachenko's prime.

I think if he had stayed and 130 and wrecked guys like Vaquero, Valdez, Conceicao, and Shakur and still had the same amount of prestige and popularity as he did when he was Nomaschanko and everybody agreed he was P4P no. 1 then I absolutely believe the average fan would be putting him in a top 10 all time list. The history buffs who read news clippings are the minority when it comes to ranking guys like Langford and Fitz in top 10 all time lists really. Hell, when Loma was on his No mas tear up, some folk really did put him in their top 10. The part about what if him losing to Shakur does confuse me a bit though. You could say that about anybody. What if Shakur had stayed at 126 and got KTFO by Nick Ball? What if ODLH stayed at 140 and got the **** kicked out of him by Kostya Tszyu? Most posters here would still favour him in that fight. I imagine most bookies would have him as a slight favourite too. I mean, Shakur was having fits dealing with the pressure of De Los Santos and Nakathila and neither of those guys are in the same stratosphere as Loma's pressure and ability. Loma has a history of doing well against slick black boxers too, like GRJ, Rigo, or Haney. I think if Loma stayed at 130 and dominated in the same fashion as he showed, I think he absolutely would get name-dropped pretty regularly by your average fan when making a top 10 of all time list.

he did well. his unique style, in his prime, was scary good. wasnt unbeatable, but you needed certain tools to have a chance. like arguello at 140, loma will beat most all the challengers, but the special ones are probably above his ceiling.

I can't speak to an all inclusive ATG list, but I do believe that if he'd remained at 130lbs for the majority of his career, Loma would have beaten the very best of this era, most convincingly.

That, coupled with the proverbial eye test, would have been sufficient for consideration as one of the greatest 130lbers of all-time.

Well firstly, because a lot of boxing fans aren't too bright or don't engage their brains before they speak (not directing that at anyone in this thread). 135 is only Loma's third weight class because he turned pro when he was 25 y/o

Shakur turned pro at 19 y/o and after winning his first world title (at 126) he immediately moved up to 130 without making a single defence of it

    Twink turned pro at 18

    Haney turned pro at 16

    Teofimo turned pro at 19

Had Loma turned pro at 16-19 y/o 135 would be like his 6th weight class with same day weigh ins, if not more if he was as young as 16.

A 16 y/o Loma was campaigning at Atomweight as a amateur which is like 106lbs IIRC

Loma has never missed weight the first time of asking, let alone the second or third time

Twink lost one of his world titles at 130 on the scales after failing all three attempts to make weight, very nearly lost another one after failing two attempts, and has missed weight the first time of asking a few more times too IIRC, including once at 135

Shakur lost his world title in his 2nd weight class on the scales after missing weight by 1.6lbs and that was just his 2nd defence of his world title at that weight, 6th fight at the weight

Haney has allegedly, according to reliable sources, missed weight a number of times but it has been covered up. But even if that's untrue he was obviously using illegal means to get down to 135 (like IVs) because he's the biggest 135 pounder I've ever seen and was gigantic for the weight and he looked like the living dead on the scales.

Teofimo looked like the living dead on the scales too

So all these guys turned pro in their teens, looked ill or like death on the scales, and/or have lost their world titles on the scales and were gigantic, huge, or very big for their first and second weight classes and even big for their third ones and have been or are rehydrating a ton, a lot or still a good amount of weight in their second and third weight classes, whereas Loma turned pro aged 25 and looks tiny for his third weight class and in complete contrast to all the others is routinely fighting opponents much or way bigger, heavier and longer than him because 135 would be way more than his third weight class if he turned pro at the same age they did

And if he turned pro at the same age as Haney it would be like his 9th, and I don't even mean if he did so and was a massive weight bully like Haney either

So what he is doing is very different to what they're doing and even the closest in size to him Twink is slapping rehydration clauses on his opponents in his third/second (well 1lb over it) weight class because he says it's very unfair for fighters to be very occasionally giving away the kind of physical advantages Loma is routinely or rather the bare minimum Loma is routinely. Not Twink's fourth, fifth, or sixth or more weight class. His second/third one.

So when all those guys move up in weight and become multiple weight champions they're fighting opponents they're way bigger than, much bigger than, bigger than, or who are roughly their size sans Teofimo vs Taylor who looked considerably bigger than him.

Haney has never beaten anyone remotely close to his size

    Teofimo was massive for 135

Shakur was very big for 126 and 130 and at worst is fighting opponents his own size at 135

Twink looked ill on the scales at 130 and he weighed more in the ring at 130 than Loma does at 135 and a whole weight class more than him at 135

Again, 130, 135, 140 are only their second or third weight classes because they turned pro in their teens so in order for them to be giving away the kind of physical advantages Loma is at 135 how many more divisions North do you think they would have to move up to?

And I guarantee you none of them would be able to win three belts individually on the road at those weights or get robbed of becoming undisputed at those weights. 100% guarantee

Also, let's not forget how many of these multiple weight champions and greats are proven PED cheats who had to jack themselves with PEDs to help them bridge the gap to campaign or win titles at higher weights and who weakened their opponents with catchweights and rehydration clauses too

As for the amazingly skilled Shakur and Haney

    Explain this one to me?

So as Loma is obviously tiny for 135, is routinely facing opponents who are way bigger, heavier and longer than him and has fought many legit bangers and KO artists not only his size or bigger but way bigger too

And he's fought 13 world champions in just 21 fights, all either in their prime or close to it, 9 of them much or way bigger than him, 10 of them bigger, 2 the same size and only one smaller than him

And he's fighting on the road or in his opponent's backyards all the time too

Despite this he still sports a KO 66% and has stopped, dropped, badly hurt or hurt every fighter he has fought at 135 sans Teo, a division which, as said, is only his third one because he turned pro aged 25 not in his late teens.

    Linares was KO'd
    Kambosos was KO'd
    Crolla was KO'd
    Nakatani was KO'd

Pedraza was dropped x 2 and very nearly KO'd
Commey was dropped and very nearly KO'd
Campbell was dropped and very nearly KO'd

When I say very nearly KO'd I mean like they escaped getting KO'd by the skin of their teeth

    Haney was hurt
    Ortiz was hurt

All of them were much or way bigger than Loma

Despite the big/huge physical disadvantages he's routinely giving away, he still simultaneously remains one of the very best offensive and best defensive fighters in the sport and is great to watch and isn't stinking the joint out running like a cheetah, holding like an octopus, ducking below waist level, stiff-arming etc.

Haney was absolutely gigantic for 135 and 140 too and is way bigger and heavier than everyone he's beaten

    He sports a KO 48%

Has never stopped a single world champion he's fought even though he was way bigger than all of them

3 of the 6 he's fought were old men

2 shot to bits and have been stopped in 10 of their combined 14 losses and were known to be chinny in their primes against opponents their own size

Has only scored 1 KD in his last 8 fights and only 1 KD in his entire career against a world champion

Shakur was a very big 126, moved up immediately after winning the belt, lost his title at 130 on the scales after his 2nd defence and 5th fight at the weight because he couldn't make weight anymore at that weight which he was also big for, and he's looks about the same size as the 135 pounders he's fought

    He sports a KO 45%

Has stopped 2 of his last 8 opponents

Has only stopped 1 at 135

Has never dropped anyone at 135 albeit he did stop Yoshino

Has only fought 3 world champions al of who smaller than him or the same size

Has only scored 2 KDs against world champions against the much smaller Valdez and similar size Robson

And he is scared of getting hit by fighters his own size who aren't even big punchers or above C level

And he has stunk out the joint numerous times and even his own hometown fans boo him and leave the venue in their droves before the final bell due to him stinking out the joint

And even worse, now imagine how much less successful Haney and Shakur would be f they were actually giving away the kind of physical advantages Loma routinely is and how much lower their KO% would be, how petrified they would be of getting hit, especially when facing actual legit punchers and KO artists and world champs and top contenders at those weights like he is?

And If you need help getting to sleep you can go and watch Shakur stinking out the joint against light hitting D level his size

FTR, Shakur's best ever win (Valdez), a fighter he looked two divisions bigger than, is the same guy Loma schooled a same size as himself version of 12-1 in the amateurs despite having a broken hand

Loma is an excellent fighter, a pleasure to watch, but severely overrated by some.

He just took too many early rounds off or spent one too many rounds to figure out his opponent.
If he had stepped on the gas from the get go he would have won every fight.
It’s too late for him to face tank now though

With the low activity of today's fighters it's hard to crack the top 10, especially if you stay in your division and doesn't fight any outstanding fighters. Monzon ruled MW for a decade with an iron fist and retired as champion. Yet you never hear him talked about as top 10 material. Louis had more defenses of his crown than Lomachenko has had fights and he's not a lock for top 10. So it would be hard,

I believe he was overconfident and it got him burned.
He could have avoided all the losses by being more sensible about the size/weight differences and where he fought.

The idea he wasn't afraid to lose and therefore it's ok to be robbed or take dumb losses is absurd.

It would absolute haunt him every day that he lost to salido and lopez and haney.

You could really see this overconfidence in the lead up to the lopez fight. He didn't take these fights because he wanted challenges, he took them because he was convinced he was so much better he could overcome the huge size differences.

It was pretty dumb considering he didn't have Pac's PEDs.
