As it turns out, the WBC didn't actually order Canelo to face Yildirim

"Canelo Alvarez isn’t being 'ordered' to fight little-known Avni Yildirim next for the vacant World Boxing Council super-middleweight title. Instead, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman explained to The Athletic, this is what Alvarez wants.

The WBC Board of Governors voted 36-1 Tuesday morning to grant four-division champion Alvarez’s request to fight mandatory contender Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) of Turkey.

Alvarez, thanks to his designation as the WBC middleweight Franchise Champion, beat out others who had sought to fight for the belt vacated Friday by former champion David Benavidez. This includes WBA super-middleweight champion Callum Smith and Benavidez himself, who came in nearly three pounds over the division’s limit ahead of his bout with Roamer Alexis Angulo last weekend."

I’m just saying are we really surprise at anything WBC/Canelo related.. This the same org that took the belt from Sergio while he was active and handed it to JCC Jr. What makes it even worse is Sergio openly wanted to fight JCC Jr whom was #1 in the WBC rankings but instead JCC Jr’s camp felt he wasn’t ready.. If you remember that then nothing they do is surprising.

I’m far from a Dillian Whyte fan, but if Tyson Fury defeats Wilder again there is no way they’re gonna strip Fury..

Benavidez lost the title on the scales. Now the belt is vacant. Yildirum is the WBC #1 ranked contender at Super Middleweight, so he is next in line for a title shot. Canelo as the WBA Super Middleweight Champ and the Unified Champion at Middleweight has decided to challenge for the vacant WBC World Title at Super Middleweight which would be against the #1 Contender Yildirum.

I'm seeing a lot of complaining about this for some reason, this is pretty straight forward, Canelo is challenging for the vacant 168-lb WBC world title. He's not choosing the opponent, Yildirum was next in line for a title shot as #1 contender in the WBC rankings.

Sergio actually got ****ed over by HBO.
Zbik was the WBC mandatory for Martinez, but HBO turned it down. So Martinez fought Dzinziruk istead. Because HBO at the time owed Gary Shaw a fight.
What happened next? HBO had no problems with Chavez Jr. facing Zbik.

You’re right I’m glad you refreshed my memory on that.. I just remember them vividly wanting JCC Jr to have that belt.. And he wanted to fight both Zbik and Chavez only to be screwed by the WBC and HBO..

A lot of shady **** went down with that fight. I doubt it was just HBO´s call.

he’s clearly chose his opponent. The WBC have said as much.

Please tell me the definition of a WBC diamond champion?

Why does Canelo not fight the "actual" WBA SMW super and Ring champion then? Would this not be a more prestigious win?

I should have guessed that the bottom hadn't been reached in this story yet. I was thinking that this was a crappy mandatory that was being foisted by the WBC and that Canelo had little to do with it. I was wrong. I should have guessed that El Pollo Rojo alla Clenbuterolo had begged for the chance to hunt down the leftovers of Eubank Jr.  Alvarez rooting through the garbage cans outside the rec centre looking for an opponent :rolleyes:

DAZN is happy with that one, but they are not willing to pay 40mil for it.
